Was chatting with my kid today about freezing my strawberries and he mentioned that I could preserve them the same way they do for doomsday supplies. Well, I decided to do the google thing and noticed a lot of results for doomsday. What is the current threat to life here on earth and when is it coming about? I don't believe in it, I think war is doing a good enough job.

Apparently, the world is going to end on the 21st December 2012, if want to believe the alleged Mayan predictions.
I tell people that like to spout this crock -"So don't bother with Christmas presents, etc., and just leave all your money and valuables to me, as you won't be needing them, right?" ~ Strangely enough, no takers thus far.rolleyes

Will be about as much of an end to humanity as the Y2K computer 'bug' was.;)

Just like Nostradamus and all the other false prophets/prophecies, people like to believe that they have some special powers and knowledge that no one else has. ~ So successfully predict all winning Lotto results for the next ten years for me and I'll be impressed. If not - I'll at least be rich.:-D

Maybe you need a new angle. Tell them that you will hold their stuff for them till they return from the after life. Put all their money in a high yielding interest account and you get to keep all the interest. :) Oh, don't forget you have to charge them a slight fee to do this ... maybe about 5% of the amount you are holding for them. :-D

There is likely to be some big space rock with our name in it somewhere floating around, unless we fcuk it up ourselves with some war that spirals out of control and ends in a nukefest!

World is already heading in that direction.
Middle East and North Korea come to mind.

When a certain species population explodes out of balance, nature usually cleans things up to set balance. I myself believe that there are too many people on this planet, however I don't foresee any doomsday threats. My guess is that natural disasters will happen more frequently and much more violently killing a lot of people to reduce the population.

Meh, natural disasters and people killing each other has always been around. Read any history or natural science book. Empires are still fighting with each other, plagues still happen, crime still goes on.
An asteroid, comet, or meteorite calling by and saying "hello" is always on the cards. They say life was created by such events, also the mass-extinctions. Life will probably also end by a similar such event. ~ "C'est la vie":confused

So what time frame would you be expecting mass extinction?

My favourite doomsday prophecy was the "Saves live in May" guy,his website was posted here on Majorgeeks and we watched live as his prediction didn't come true,a French pilot IIRC.

He had a bunch of followers on his forum all wondering why nothing had happened, huddled in their basements:-D

I remember his last post was "Nasa detects a high speed mover inbound" Or something like that, then a few days later the site and forum had shutdown.

His prediction was an asteroid would hit underground volcano's of the east coast of USA and cause close to an extinction event.

I kinda freaks me out I still remember all this,I have much better use of the space in my brain.:(

Was that the dude who predicted and then when we were all still here the day after his prediction, he came up with a new date claiming he had made a mathematical error?
    I liked that one :-D

I can't remember, his website is gone as well as all remnants of it:confused

The world won't end in 5 billion either,we're stuck thinking like humansi.e the world will be the same, humans will be going about their day to day business ect.ect.

A couple of hundred years ago we were executing people for blasphemy, thought the world was flat, the sun went round the moon, the world was only a few thousand years old, spells could heal people ect.ect.

In a hundred or so years since adopting the scientific method we now use machines to look inside people without cutting them open, have visited the moon and photographed the places that exist soon after the big bang.

What will the world be like in another 100 years? 1000 years ? 1,000,000 years?

In 5 billion years we will be masters of our own universe, creating a new sun will be child's play or moving the earth for a few years will be no problem,I would wager in less than 1000 years we'll have found or created a better universe that's more suited to life so what happens in this one will be irrelevant.

But that's me just confined by my human brain I cannot imagine what the future will hold for civilisation,if we all die out I would wager it's because someone leaned on the wrong switchrolleyes

I would like to think that we would be like Q from Star Trek.
Love to have that power now.
    I WANT IT. NOW.

Or maybe we could create an intentional rift in the time space continuum so we relive it over and over until we finally find a way to either escape or fix it. :confused I think that would work.

I dunno, what if you had it and the universe held no mystery any more?Time didn't mean anything, space didn't mean anything, you've done and tried everything.

I analogise it to a cow in a field,it's happy chomping grass and keeping his spot dry from rain. If he became more intelligent he'd figure out his destiny was a happy meal so I doubt he'd be happier.

    Ignorance is bliss:cool
