    Hello

I like to first thanks for the all the free support you guys are making.

Anyway, here is what I need.

I have 2 laptops, one I'm using have PATA hard disc (Toshiba SatellitE), and the other one 'm not really sure but it's Sony Vaio PCG-9P6L. I think it must be PATA because it's old, I even disassembled the hard disc and looks like PATA drive from google search I found...

They are both old laptops and about 7 years old.

Anyway I need some data frommy Soy Vaio but the laptop is broken. It' not completely broken I can actually turn it on using toothpick,, (long story), plus the monitor is physically broken.

Anyway I know it requires USB converter thing b/w SATA and PATA drive, but this is between PATA and PATA so.. I hope I can just plug it in to my current laptop without a problem.

    Thanks

Something like this should work. You would leave the current HD in the working laptop. Attach the HD from the broken laptop to the IDE/PATA connector on the cable and the other end of the cable goes into the USB of the working laptop. Here is a detailed guide: http://help.artaro.eu/index.php/data-recovery/recover-files-from-hard-disk.html You should have access to the old HD and be able to copy files to the laptops internal HD.

Another option if you only want data retrieval would be to put the HD from the broken laptop into the working laptop (don't try to boot the laptop with this HD). Then download something like Puppy Linux and write the ISO file to a blank CD as an image file. Imgburn's "Write Image File to Disc" would do it. Then boot the laptop from the CD and it will give you access to the files on the HD which you could copy over to a USB flash drive. thnks for reply BUT I don't have IDE/PATA connector. Can I just disassemble my current HD and put the another laptop's HD there?? I need to know if this will cause some problem prior to doing so..

I only need to check one file, I'm not planning to copying mass files or anything.

Read my post on Linux again.

You would remove the HD from the working laptop and put it aside. You would take the HD from the broken laptop and put it in the working laptop. (It should fit because they are both PATA)

Then you boot the computer from a Linux CD (you just boot from the CD, you don't install Linux). That will give you a Linux desktop where you can find the HD and its files (at the bottom left of the desktop will be icons like sda1, sda2 they are your HD partitions). So you click on them and you look for your file. When you find your file you can copy it to a USB flash drive.

edit: sorry I didnt see Puppy Linux, but where can I dl? I don't trust websites thesedays specially after the malware incident...
another question, if I have IDE/PATA connector , i dont need Linux CD? Can you link me what's actually IDE/PATA connector is? I really can't find off from google.. I might have it

This is a stable version. It will come as an ISO file. The ISO file has to be burnt to a blank CD as an image file according to the instructions I gave before using Imgburn. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

The idea is that a Linux CD can be booted from and will run a desktop environment directly off the CD. You do not use the install option. Just boot from the CD you burn and it will take you to a desktop that looks a lot like Windows where you will be able to access the HD to copy files.

It should have been written as an image or iso file which is different than a data file. The burning program would have looked inside the iso and written files and folders to the CD rather than one big iso file.

You could use a program to put the iso file onto an empty USB flash drive. This would work if the laptop with the working screen can boot to a USB device. What is the model number of the working laptop--I could look to see if it can boot to USB thumb drive?

Sorry, I thought I had answered. It doesn't look like that model will boot from USB. All I can suggest is to get some fresh CDs and burn the ISO file as an image file rather than as a data file. I've seen 5 packs of CDs in Walgreen's for $2, so you don't necessarily have to get a big spindle full of discs. It really would be the easiest way.

Either that or buy one of the cables so you can connect the HD to the other laptop.

not sure diffrence b/w data file and image file,
but I see one file in CD which is what I downloaded off from linux puppy site.
    lupu-528.005.iso
is the only thing I see in the CD, u think that's a data file or image file?
    below is screenshot

I'm not seeing the screenshot but if it says ISO at the end then that is a data file.

If it were written as an image file it would have been broken up into smaller files which the computer would use to boot. (ISO is sort of like a ZIP format. It is used to keep files together for download but in order to use them they have to be unzipped or decompressed.)

The puppy ISO on a CD when written correctly look like this http://imgur.com/s8O5I

Just to be clear, you only have the two laptops but no desktop to try to attach the laptop HD internally? I think this is the case but just wanted to be sure. If no desktop then burning another CD in the correct format would really be the most inexpensive manner to copy the file.

I have computer (desktop?) which I don't really use. I just hate to go to store to get another CD. I also need to know how to burn it into image file. I saw the instruction, but I don't know where to get that WriteMagic thing ..

If you get a CD later on I can walk you through the steps. But this guide shows you it is just selecting "Write Image File to Disc" option and browsing to the ISO file and clicking the burn icon in the bottom of the window. You can get the program here.

If the desktop computer boots up into Windows you can probably connect the laptop drive to that one. Do you know if the desktop computer uses IDE drives. You would see flat grey cables like these. Look to see if there are two of these cables, one connected to the HD and one connected to the CD drive.

All IDE devices use the grey flat data cable and one power cable coming from the power supply. Does your laptop HD have this type of connection?
