Just how bad is the MPAA?

I’ll preface this with a disclaimer: No one here (myself included), at Majorgeeks, (Mods, Admins, Owners and/or its members) condones/advocates piracy in any way, shape or form. The expressed opinion you will read below is solely of the writer.

If this is too hot a topic or something, I will completely understand if this gets deleted. However, this was brought to my attention and I think it’s a very important read on the inner workings of this agency. I mean, the corruption, intimidation, abuse, mishandling of evidence and the flat out lying of FACT, Ltd (The UK office of the MPAA) is positively mind blowing.

The devious nature and underhandedness of this company is not something I think should be swept under the rug but let me reiterate, my point in posting this is to reveal the horribleness of this company and the treatment of this individual and *not* supporting of what the man was doing (running a website linking to tv shows & movies).

Be forewarned it’s a very, very, VERY long read but well worth it in my opinion.

    WTF???:confused

If I read the story correctly, the guy involved did not engage in or abet in the sharing of any type of downloadable content (Pirate Bay, eDonkey, etc). He simply posted links to public, viewable content on the web sites of the movie studios.

Assuming the facts stated are true, the first question is what the hell are the movie studios thinking? When studios post movie previews, interviews with stars, etc., the sole purpose is marketing the film to potential viewers or DVD buyers. As such, if I ran a movie studio, I would want and encourage other websites to say, "Here's a really cool movie. Click here to see a preview and interviews with the stars and director."

The second question is what the hell is the British government thinking? Internet users (including those here on Major Geeks) post millions of links every day to copyrighted sites. This begs the question: If I live in the UK and post a link to a free Microsoft download (say, IE9), does this give Microsoft the right to prosecute me for copyright infringement? Using the logic shown here, the answer appears to be yes.

I hope some MG members from the UK weigh in on this topic with more information. Until then, score one for the USA on at least making an attempt to keep the copyright nazis in check.

If you downloaded the .rar at the end of the page and go through all the .pdf's he has, emails, letters, reports, it all seems to concur with what he is saying. It seems they took any route they could to make an "example" of this guy and get their "conviction". Even if that means lying, cheating, stealing & intimidating. It's rather insane, just so they say they caught a "pirate" even though it's bit of a grey area, he actually did nothing *legally* wrong.

Funny- I just noticed the website is down. I wonder why that is?? rolleyes

Anyway, for anyone else that wants to read, I'll copy/paste from the cached version I pulled from Google.

I personally find the MPAA as a quango of leachers and not really dedicated to the artists they represent.

True but I'm surprised by how they seem to keep getting away with these dirty, underhanded (not to mention, illegal) tactics. Their wallets must reach deep into the pockets of those higher up in authority.

this just goes to show how $$$$ hungery the MPAA/RIAA are http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19370862

They do not represent the general artists they are a company of their own as if they where a representation of artists they would be null cash rich, but they take huge sums in cash, but try and find their statement of accounts online, NO.

They blindly accuse internet users of piracy with suspect law firms that hound users into paying a sum to avoid being named int he press, intimidation at its worst.

I'm all for music and film artists and companies getting what they are deserved and piracy being curbed, but not at the cost that these quangos are causing!

Exactly, what they did to this guy (and I just watched a video the other day of when they raided Kim Dotcom's estate) both were extreme overkill by overzealous, overreaching, greedy, manipulative individuals. It's sickening that out of everything that is currently going on in the US, this is what the FBI/DOJ (whoever else) is spending time and money on.

(not that I think we shouldn't try to end piracy but I certainly think there are more pressing issues than this)

    Agreed. 100%.
