Thinking my laptop is fried

    :(

My daughter's friend broke the fishbowl on our counter yesterday and the water went all over my laptop.

I let it dry yesterday and tried it today....nothing.:cry All I got was a slight blinking light.

I don't have everything saved from on it (I know I know). So now I'm going to most likely have to buy a new laptop and also try to get data off this harddrive (preferably by myself and not taking it somewhere).

Oh man that sux LauraR. I assume it was powered up at the time?
Do you have an external enclosure that will take the drive? Those can come in handy for transferring data. Just need to get the correct type that has the interior connection you need. Some are designed to accept multiple types of hard drives.

(Uh oh, you didn't have 47 different types of back ups? For shame.rolleyes;))

It does suck. It was powered up which I'm assuming is even worse. :(

I don't have anything like that. I'll start a thread in hardware though about this when the time comes.

and yeah, I'm a bad geek.

    Hi Laura

You may be able to take the HDD out and with some SATA or IDE cables (can get these from most PC stores) be able to see if the HDD can be accessed to get any data off it.

    Something like this HERE

Awesome on the idea lbmest and Dave! I will most definitely try one of those as they are clearly cheaper than taking it to a shop, which I'm not hot on anyway, unless I can sit there and watch them. :-D

I like the docking station idea better for a temporary fix than an external enclosure. I didn't realize they came in that many "flavors". Good idea and cheaper also.;)
I'd still use an external for long time usage/storage.

I use a docking station at home as I have loads of old HDDs and SSDs in various sizes and they make great backup devices, but the docking station is really handy for this situation you have Laura and less expensive to use than a shop.

Plus you can always utilise the docking station in daily PC life as I do for backups, just like a big hige USB pen.

Sorry to hear about the lappy, (again!), Laura :(. Yeah, like the guys said, a docking station is the easiest be, (every true Geek should have at least one, i.m.o.). For future reference, you can even get desktop cases that have a docking station built into the case. I build such systems all the time. Just make sure the docking station accepts 21/2" H.D.D.'s.

E.G. Like this Thermaltake V9 offering:-

Damn, I obviously need to pay more attention to hardware coming out.:-o
That is a great option on that case Phantom.

(Just ain't enough hours in the day.:()

It seems that you and I have about the same luck when it comes to laptops. :cry

I just bought one of these to try to salvage data (unsuccessfully) off a drive in my new laptop (less than 8 months old) that just died because apparently that particular model of drive has a manufacturers defect in it and although they know they won't do anything about it. :mad sorry /rant LOL

I did hook it up to a (different) old drive in a laptop I don't use anymore (it's broken) and was it was easy. Just a simple plug and play and I was able to just drag and drop the contents of that drive on this brand new drive (replacement for the dead one), just wanted to see if it would work and it did, very easily. I had it going for about 20 minutes and it did get a little hot so I just let it cool down before I removed it from the enclosure.

Poor Laura, I feel your pain. :(

Bummer, Laura. Office Depot has a Toshiba for $299. Has 4 gigs ram, but that's all I know about it.

Thanks for the sympathy. I'm going to get one of the dock things and have a friend of ours help me open up the laptop and see what I can recover.

Yeah, dy...you and I have horrible luck. I swear this laptop was unlucky to start with.

I mean really...the first one with the coffee...that was my fault. I've been careful since. Who the hell thinks a fish tank is going to get hit with a giant baseball sized jaw breaker candy that your kid's friend is going to play with and break and have to water go all over your laptop???

It's pretty definitely fried. Nothing happens when I turn it on. *sigh*

Sorry to hear about the death of your PC.

A bit off-topic, we need to be careful about using the word "fried". The Texas State Fair has a contest for the most offbeat fried foods - if one of the food vendors hears this, deep fried Toshibas, Dells and HPs may be on next year's menu. :-D

Pretty simple on the IBM/Dell/HP/Toshiba I have opened. Turn a screw or two to remove access door. On some the HD is still attached to the access door- up to three screws to remove drive. All the parts are salvagable to some geek on eBay needing good screen.

Lastly, did you happen to take the extended warranty? Staples warranty covers spills albeit there is some pain to collect.

    ;)

IMO, the best extended warranty company is Square Trade (www.squaretrade.com). Their prices for PC coverage are about half of what retail stores charge and they have a guarantee that - if they can't fix it five days - they'll send you a check for the original purchase price to go out and buy a new one.

100% agree on SquareTrade! Awesome rep and much cheaper.

The laptop is not fried (oops, sorry gman...broken.LOL Fried sounds better though.)

I swear this freakin thing has nine lives. I was all set to order another and then the thing booted up. The monitor didn't work. I hooked it up to the tv and everything was working perfectly. Then I unplugged the tv and now the whole thing is working.

    I'm mixed...here I thought I was going to get a new laptop. :-D

Yay! Good deal on the laptop working again, Laura. Lazarus of the laptops strikes again, Lol!

So, no new lappy for you. But could be worse like me, blasted fridge shorted out and died, last week, clothes dryer went belly up and decided to stop rotating this week, and stove is on it's last legs. Spent nearly $2k already - Grrr!:cry

Glad you got crazy laptop working again but now you know is the perfect time for a backup! LOL

Laptops can be such strange creatures. I just turned mine on and sometime during the night it decided it wanted to go back in time. I noticed that the date was set to August 20, 2009. What a random date for it to pick? :-D

Sweet deal, Laura!!! As everyone previously stated, back it up now!! ;)

Ewww...electronics like that are no fun to spend money on!

Me too! I can't believe this things started back up. I was literally about to buy another. Even had hubby convinced. LOL

2009? I hope that was at least a good year. :-D

I got all my data I hadn't had backed up all backed up now, Tim. :p

I was most worried about my latest photos.

I'm testing fate BOOM...the fish tank is back on the counter. I figure that can't happen again. lol

    Yes, the betta survived. :)

The way the thing is going it might need to be fire proof. :-D

That's good. Bettas are very pretty fish, aren't they? A bit tricky with their fighting tendencies, though.

They are! He is really quite beautiful. He's purple-y red and flowing. The females are not very pretty. I believe you just have to make sure you don't put two males together.

Attached are some pics of him (yes, I have taken pics of my fish...mostly to prove he uses his leaf bed I bought him LOL)
