I am running windows xp professional and some applications are not opening they start then suddenly die. I am worried it is either a virus or a memory issue.

The reasons for these concerns are I had some memory issues when trying to reinstall my avast anti-virus. And my avast anti-virus mysteriously came uninstalled from my computer prompting me to redownload it and reinstall it.

Any suggestions would be helpful I have already ran a scan with avast I am currently running an malwarebytes scan , and after this I will be running an IObit malware fighter scan.

Not all applications are effected by this problem most recently a game called crossfire and gimp 2.8 are the ones I have noticed so far but I havn't checked most of my applications. Both of these were recently reinstalled after noticing the problem and hoping to cure it by reinstall.

Also I have run two chkdsk's and it reports 2016kb in bad sectors I have had this computer for a while it was given to me by a member of the forums a while ago so I am fearful of potential harddrive failure.

Thank you very much in advance for any help that I am given I have been with the forums for a while and have never been let down.

Did you have the bad sectors repaired by chkdsk?

Can you check the Event Viewer if there is any hint about why these programs may have ended?

the sectors still weren't repaired by chkdsk using either /f or /r

as for event viewer there is no sign of any reasons for failure in event viewer my guess is its probably the bad sectors

currently I am running a superantispyware scan. I will set it to run one more chkdsk after the scan.

That is bad! Make sure you have a full backup of your system in case the HD fails.

I keep regular backups on a 2TB external harddrive
