ZeroAccess?

A week ago, my wife noticed a dramatic slow down of her laptop. I ran Malwarebytes and it found several things include ZACCESS and cleaned them all. However, the laptop was still slow. I found out the AntiVirus stopped working which is probably how it got in. When removed from the internet, the laptop speed is back to normal.

I installed AVAST and it kept popping up messages for several sites it prevented from opening. The 5 sites that it prevented continually are listed next. village70.com, 178.238.227.181, botanicalax.com, xamazonia.com, coutsix.com.

I ran the 5 tools in Read and Run Me First Malware Removal. TDSSKiller found and removed rootkit. The laptop is back to normal speed but Rogue Killer and Hitman Pro list ZeroAccess in a hidden folder in Windows\Installer. I attached the log files including the first Malwarebytes log from September 7. I am hopping the repair is not too difficult.

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Files /folder tab and locate these 4 detections:
    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] @ : C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{33865024-6700-7324-acc9-553fc855395b}\@ --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] U : C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{33865024-6700-7324-acc9-553fc855395b}\U --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] L : C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{33865024-6700-7324-acc9-553fc855395b}\L --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] Desktop.ini : C:\WINDOWS\Assembly\GAC\Desktop.ini --> FOUND
Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
Do not reboot your computer yet.

Now re run HitmanPro and have it delete what it finds if anything left after RogueKiller. Attach new log.

    Delete these if you can.

    C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC\Desktop.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.txt

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Run Ccleaner to get rid of temp files.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Open up your services and scroll down to the Background Intelligent Transfer Service if it shows, let me know its status and start up type please.

Your firewall is broken too and that needs mending.

Files in this folder can only be seen from the command prompt and only if you change the attributes to not be hidden/system. This file is not a problem anyway ( it is zero bytes). It is quite normal for this file to be here and it is mark as SHR ( System - Hidden - ReadOnly ) ;) RogueKiller is incorrect about calling this ZeroAccess by default. However it does not hurt to remove when there were other signs of ZA. The user just cannot easily do it unless you show them how. RK may delete in the 1st part of the fix too.

Oh and just an additional note, the normal Desktop.ini file that is found here is typically 227 bytes and would contain info like below:

Thanks Kestrel13! and chaslang. I ran the requested tools and attached the 3 log files. As far as BITS, it was not showing. I looked up how to re-install it. After the re-install, the status was stopped and startup type is manual. Also, the desktop.ini file was already deleated, so probably done by Rougue Killer.

Uninstall the below very old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 26

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click OTM.exe and select Run as administrator to run it.
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe
    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\Vicki\Local Settings\Temp\5A2D7FED-5860-4CB9-9935-8FAAF1184829.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\installer\{33865024-6700-7324-acc9-553fc855395b}
    C:\Recycler\S-1-5-21-1029580245-3772876397-1378376527-1009\desktop.ini
    C:\Recycler\S-1-5-21-1029580245-3772876397-1378376527-1012\desktop.ini

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I have removed the old JAVA and installed the latest version. I also ran OTM and MGTools. The log files are attached. The laptop is working well and seems to be back to normal speed.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
