Computer Potentially Infected

Yesterday I may have picked up something malicious from a torrent.

As soon as I opened the file, uTorrent went unresponsive, and the computer turned sluggish. Task Manager would not show on screen, only on the bottom right of the screen on the toolbar by the clock.

I restarted in safe mode and ran a full scan with Essentials and Malwarebytes. Both showed nothing. I restarted the comp after the 13 hour scan and found it would freeze if I tried to click on the toolbar, and it freezed again when I tried to run a scan with essentials (though possibly a coincidence). At one point I tried to just click the background of the desktop and the wallpaper was replaced with a blank white screen.

I restarted again and started task manager right away, and, for whatever reason, my computer has been running perfectly fine.

I can't risk the potential for an infection though, so I posting logs.

I recently found having more than one antivirus program is counterproductive, even detrimental (even old versions), I have expired Avast and Norton on my comp, if that helps you identify the problem.

I have have since uninstalled the expired Avast and Norton.

I ran the scan with MGtools, but I couldn't find a .zip. Only individual files.

    I appreciate any help

If you can see the individual files then you have the zipped file!! Check again. If you boot from C:\ it should be right on the root of C.

Sorry, I'm not very familiar with these programs.

I notice that everytime someone posts a MGtools log it's called, obviously enough, "MGlogs.zip," however when I go to C: directory the only folder I see associated with MGtools I see is a folder called "MGtools" and nothing else.

The MGtools folder contains multiple files like "newfiles.txt" and some bat files, but I don't see any files named "MGlogs.zip" and if I search using the Start menu search bar, nothing shows up.

I'm likely overlooking something very obvious, so I appreciate your help.

Just attach whatever contains the multiple files. ;) But do not attach the individual files. If this does not work soon I'll have to have you run a tool to let me see exactly where it is.

I just tried to attach it, but it won't attach the folder, only opens it. Sorry about this, but I might need to run that tool.

Just click start and type MGlogs.zip and it should be found! :)

After a long delay, I have run MGtools again. However, though I see that it has created a ZIP file as it does the scan, the scan itself now seems to freeze at the "running analyse.exe" step.

Okay, after a very long delay, I have run MGtools again and I have found the zip. I swear it wasn't there before, Kestrel. I swear.

    Hopefully you are still around.

I am always floating about somewhere ;)

Uninstall the below using Revo Uninstaller.

    • Ask Toolbar
    • Incredibar Toolbar on IE

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\Program Files (x86)\StartNow Toolbar

    :reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "StartNow Search Protect"=-
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2415444898-4008499802-436394070-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run]
    "StartNow Search Protect"=-
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{878A85BC-95BB-4EBE-AE01-8E0530081FBC}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{2AF7BA85-BEEA-47E6-A123-57E4EA4CD192}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{36377DD7-B3EB-42f5-986F-680BAF59BA9D}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{878A85BC-95BB-4EBE-AE01-8E0530081FBC}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{CFF4DB9B-135F-47c0-9269-B4C6572FD61A}]

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Thanks for the help. Things have been running relatively fine since the day the problem initially occurred, so I'm starting to think that maybe it was the result of just having too much junk on my computer. I also have a lot of shows (to be specific, I believe it was close to a metric crap ton), as well, so I've backed them up on a portable hard drive and just deleted about half of them from my drive.

Please find attached the OTM log and MGtools zip.

Also...I have to ask...is your name a reference to something? I feel like I know it from somewhere.

Only that I love Kestrels and I like the number thirteen. :) I see lots of other Kestrel13's when I type it into google, none of them me except for here at MG's.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
