Did you try options menu in wmp? In the library tab or player tab. In the library tab uncheck automatic media information update.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To change the registry, follow these steps:

    Start Registry Editor.
Locate the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
Type WindowsMediaPlayer, and then press ENTER.
With the WindowsMediaPlayer key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type DisableAutoUpdate, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
Type 0 (or delete the 1), and then click OK.
    Close Registry Editor.

    Greetings, Goldenskull...

Just had a thought about a possible end-around solution: maybe you could uninstall / reinstall WMP, if possible? Might be worth a shot. Here's a link to a downloadable version of Windows Media Player 10 (I'm assuming that you're referring to WMP 10 - if not, browse OldApps for the one you want).

Be advised: I have not tried this, so I have no idea if this will solve your problem or cause any additional problems.

MadCityMan has the right solution, although, in my case, typing 1 instead of 0 worked for me.
