You know some weatherperson/reporter is out there all puffed up with pride that their term 'Frankenstorm' took hold for the Hurricane that is coming up the NE coast of the US. :-D

I have to say it is rather creative. That's the ginormous headline on our local paper this morning.

The hurricane is going to be combining with a major weather system to create some massive 'hybrid' storm. :(

Thanks Dave. My husband and I were talking about it this morning and were thinking we should probably have ice and batteries at the very least for when the power goes out. Some people around here have generators, but we've never gone to that extreme.

I hoping there's ice and batteries left in the stores.

Ice, Batteries, water and tinned food is always good to have in an emergency as is some basic med supplies, bandages, antiseptic wash and pain meds.

He just got home and got really lucky. He got the last packs of 'D' batteries left in the Target he went to. The guy who worked there said they weren't getting anymore, but had found some last night in the back they didn't know they had and threw them in a bin in the photo section. Apparently people kept asking him about them in the cart and he realized he better keep an eye on them so people didn't come take them...people can get nuts in these situations. :-D

Then there was no ice, but he decided to go to the drug store and there were 6 small bags left that he took all of.

I'll go to the grocery store tomorrow. We have water, so we're good there. I'll just make sure we have food that doesn't need electric to cook.

Hmm,...yeah - It's Tropical Cyclone season over her in the north-west and Queensland, too. We occasionally get a hammering down in Perth, also. Just a seasonal hazard here, as elsewhere, i suppose.
But yes, Laura - I hear there is a real doozy coming through the N.E. and Pennsylvania areas.
Not good. Just do the usual:- fill the bath tub up with cold water, keep food and first aid supplies handy, as stated. get yourself one of those wind-up to charge torches and radios if you don't already have one. Hope that you fair up okay, Laura.

Stay safe all of you who are going to be in Sandy's path. Perhaps we will get here some remnants of this frankenstorm.

Stay safe! And buy some candles and canned soup. If you lose power, you can be a little creative and heat the soup up with a candle.

I would say get some extra ammo, but I am sure you already have plenty on hand. ;)

OT, and way over priced, but I got a chuckle out of this: http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_616354_-1?N=858982010+933739036

Note: Limit 2 per customer. :confused 25k rounds is OK, but anything over 25k rounds is too much. :-D

And for the record, no, I don't buy my ammo by the barrel...

    Laura,

Having been through several major hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, a generator isn't a bad investment if you can afford one (especially if you have above ground power lines with lots of trees around and/or were without power for days after Irene or other storms). If you have a Northern Tool nearby, they sell a 3500-watt model for around $400 - enough power to run the 'frig, one space heater, the TV and lights.

For those considering a generator, remember to stock up on gas as well. My 3500-watt model (above) goes through 5 gallons of gas in about 15 hours.

At they very least, consider buying a small AC power inverter (about 150-watt) that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter. This will allow you to charge your notebook PC if the power is out for several days. Also be sure you have car chargers for your cell phones.

Been there, done that. Stay safe.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

I know this may be a little late, but another consideration for post-storm necessities is a small propane stove and a few canisters of propane. When we got hit hard by Hugo in '89 we lost power for roughly 3 weeks - that little 2-burner stove provided some hot meals and hot coffee for the whole neighborhood.

    $5000 for 12,500 rounds - a 350-pound, 30-gallon container. rolleyes

If you have to use a forklift to unload the ammo from your truck, the neighbors might get a bit suspicious. :-D

Like I said, that stuff is way overpriced, but funny. Now, the guy I buy a lot of my ammo is on first name basis with the UPS guy. Just saying. :-D

I'm sure if the Frankenstorm is 'ALIVE' when it blows into your neighbourhood Fred it won't be for long!

Really? 17 posts without a reference to "It's alive!" :-D

The rain has started here. It's just a bit of a drizzle for now. The heavy stuff won't be coming until tomorrow afternoon (if the weather people are right rolleyes).

A lot of times around our area, the biggest issue is flooding. We have a lot of creeks, rivers, ponds in our area.

Slackers! Every single one of us, Rikky!:-D

Looks like this hurricane won't effect me. My preparations scared it away. :-D On the plus side, I found a bunch of 5.56 ammo I had forgotten about. Now, once I get my car fixed, it is off to the range. :major

You folks on the east coast, be careful!

Fred? Why do I need ammo for a hurricane?

The fact that you ask that pains me. :cry

It is a perfect time for the zombies. Think about it, if the power is off, cell phones don't work... And where do you put these people in the event of a major evacuation? http://screen.yahoo.com/sketchy-walking-almost-dead-035825135.html

Just rain and wind? Want to keep the little hurricane I have? So far hurricane Max has destroyed 2 pair of pants, one pair of jeans, about 3 square feet of linoleum floor, one leather jacket, ate a hole in one of my gun cases, tore off on strap off my backpack, and my bedspread has numerous holes in it. :-D

Think FEMA is helping me? Nope. :-D

    Nah, that's normal.
We had news of tornadoes touching down in a few counties around us and one rumored to have touched down out by our local mall ( like 3-4 miles from my place) last big storm we had. So we are all out on our front porch watching the sky while our neighbors across the street are running out of their house, around the back and down into their cellar.:-D

Just lots and lots and lots of rain so far, dy. We are in the 5-10 inch area. The wind won't be here until tonight, I think...or maybe tomorrow morning.

The shore is crazy flooded though. My parents have a house in Stone Harbor: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stone-Harbor/118428939656?sk=photos_stream

    It's pretty bad there.:(

  35. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Oh geez, that's awful :( The poor shore (areas) always get the brunt of everything.

Although I do not like the area I am living in, we usually don't get slammed too hard, a few times we have but not usually. However, I couldn't go to work today because the public trans is shut down completely and the Mayor declared a State of Emergency (and some places have mandatory evacs). Try to stay safe and out of harms way!

WOW! Didn't know how serious this storm is Obama has just been on my local radio station while I'm cleaning the bathroom warning how serious this storm is and to listen carefully to the local emergency management services on whether to evacuate or stay indoors.

Hope you guys in the US listen to North west English radio and get the message:confused :-D

The power here just flickered twice (once long enough to restart my modem) and I said "Nooooo, I need you!" and it came back on. I went to my front door and told wind that it was ok, that it could calm down and told all the trees to stand firm. LOL I'm such a nerd.
