    Good day everyone, :)

This afternoon I downloaded FoxitReader and this v9.com thing incidentally came along with it. Realized it might be some malware. After some research, I am glad I found this website.

I have followed the instructions in the various threads and attached are my logs. Most didn't detect any malicious items, or am I just not sure how to read them.

I believe my laptop is infected with the v9.com redirection virus.
Please help me with this and thanks for your time! :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click OTM.exe and select Run as administrator to run it.
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Windows\AutoKMS
    C:\Windows\tasks\AutoKMS.job
    C:\Users\Joshlyn\AppData\Local\Temp\%%%4BA0.tmp
    C:\Users\Joshlyn\AppData\Local\Temp\%%%B376.tmp
    C:\Users\Joshlyn\AppData\Local\Temp\dump.dat
    C:\Users\Joshlyn\AppData\Local\Temp\is-V5GFJ.tmp
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{33BB0A4E-99AF-4226-BDF6-49120163DE86}]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Also you will have to edit Firefox's config by typing about:config in the URL Address space and then hit enter, then locate the below and edit it to change it to google or something else you want.
    ("browser.search.defaultenginename", "v9");

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hello,

Thank you for your reply :)

    Attached are the logs.

The redirection to v9 still persists. It just redirected this particular forum window I'm on :(

(FYI: currently using Firefox, but i also have Chrome and IE which also have the problem)

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT will reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now click Start and type in cmd into the search box. Look for the black cmd.exe icon to appear above. Right click on it and select Run As Administrator.
    • OK any prompts you get.
    • This will open a command prompt.
    • Type or copy and paste the following lines ( one at a time) into the command window and hit enter after each one and wait for it to complete.
      • ipconfig /flushdns
      • ipconfig /release
      • ipconfig /renew
    • Exit the command window now and continue.

    Please download OTL by OldTimer.

Let's see if we can fix Firefox manually.
    • Run Firefox and open a new tab
    • In the URL address box type in about:config and hit enter
    • You will have to click okay to the warning about being careful.
    • Then below the URL address line a Search: line/box will appear.
    • In this search box, type browser.search.order and hit enter.
    • You should see probably two lines or so below. The one we want is browser.search.order.1
    • Right click on this line and select Modify.
    • You should get a pop form where you can enter a string value for the field.
    • Change it from v9 back to the default which is Google and then click OK.
    • If you close Firefox now and then reopen, check to see if it is really gone.
Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now! Is it really happening in Internet Explorer while no other browsers ( like Google or Firefox ) are opened?

    Hello.

    Redirection still exists in Firefox.

As for IE and Chrome, their default search engine was changed to v9, but I have removed it. Currently the redirection didn't surface on these 2 browsers.

(FYI: I use Firefox most often)

How can I remove this malware? :( I saw another post that said reformatting doesn't help?

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:
    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

You will need exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.

After reboot, delete the below folders:
    C:\Users\Joshlyn\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    Did that help?

Okay this is a fairly common problem with Chrome and Firefox. Junkware addons get into them way to easily and sometimes it is just easier to uninstall rather than find all the garbage and manually remove it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
