I would like to add a second hard drive to my HP DV7 4065dx laptop as a dual boot to run Mint. It presently has a 500gb HD. I'd like to add a Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive, does anyone know if my laptop will support a 1tb hard drive along side my present 500gb, or am I limited to another 500gb?

    thanks

No,no laptops have two hard drive bays but only one hard drive.

IN the unlikely event you find an empty hard drive slot next to your other one though there's no reason why that hard drive won't work, there's also no reason you can't remove the old hard drive and replace it with a 1TB hard drive.

If the laptop is old and drives are IDE and not sata your limited to 500gb.

Certain HP laptops DO have 2 bays but only one hard drive, (google adding a second drive to HP dv7) and mine is one of them. I'm just wondering if the main board supports larger than 500gb?
My present drive is a SATA drive. Are you saying if it is SATA I can run a larger drive? I'd like to continue to use the original 500gb drive as it is with windows 7, but add the second for storage/backup and Linux Mint.

I didn't say they didn't exist I said it's unlikely,it's very uneconomical and consumes too much space puttings 2 hard drive bays in a laptop that only uses one.

LIke I said there's no reason that drive won't work if you have a spare bay,for all intents and purposes there's no size limit on sata drives.

EDIT if your still unsure read the downloadable manual for your laptop from the HP website,in the tech specs it will list a size limit if there is one:)

    Hi,

Consider using the 1 tb drive in two partitions. For all practical purposes is the same as two drives. First make sure you have the info needed first.

    Luck, Jim

Guys, thanks for the replies, but please understand, my laptop DOES have a second drive bay, (I even opened it and looked) and will accept a second hard drive, it was one of the selling points for me. I'm simply trying to find out if there is a limit in hard drive capacity on my SATA machine, because I read somewhere that I can only add another 500gb drive since my machine only supports 1tb total. Is this number related to the main board limits or something, or was the info I read wrong, or possibly outdated?

I've answered you twice and for the second time I never said you don't have an extra drive bay:confused

The addressable limit allows sata 1 drives to have a capacity of 155 million petabites,a ridiculous amount.

In the unlikely event there is some silly manufacturer imposed limit which I have never come across it will be listed in the specifications in the manual,I do not have time to read for you at the moment.

This is the third time I've posted the same answer that you can use that drive I'm not posting it again, good luck enjoy your weekend!:)

Sorry, I didn't mean to come be a PIA, but jlphlp also suggest a partition, so I wanted to be clear that I wanted to add this drive to attain the highest amount of storage possible, and because I wanted a second drive for backup in case one failed. I did read the manual several times before I posted here believe me, I've been trying to figure this out for a while now, but can't see anything on hard drive capacity limits so I though I'd ask here, since I did read somewhere that there were limits. Hopefully what I read on limits was untrue. Thank you very much for the replies.

No problem:) If you post a link to your manual and if I have time later I'll look through the specifications for a limit,if it isn't listed though there isn't one.
