What's the geekiest thing you did this week?

  1. Hey everyone, geekiest thing i did today was make a solar powered USB charger!

    What about you?

    Can last Friday count?
If so, then I installed a few machines for my local hospital while on a job shadow there for my one college class.

    Pictures?

I made one too, uses 16 small panels to absorb the light from a large bright light source and turns it into a small dim light source, I call it the Idimmer.

Seriously though the current from these small panels sucked so I abandoned the project.

Geekiest thing this week would be to talk about my mini solar panel array to a complete stranger.

It's only Monday, so I'm going to save my answer until more of the week has gone by. You never know what I might get up to, stuck here immobile at home with a bunch of pain meds. :-D

Built another PC from collected e-waste.

Can't find it in me to sell them though. Parts cost zero dollars, so I just give them to people who need one, or need an upgrade from their current dinosaur.

It doesn't make any money, but it's fun, and it feels good when you see them smile.

I cut the basic silhouette target in half, and shot assuming the bad guy was half behind a wall.

    Target shooting of course.

    You asked. :-D

Today, umm rooted 3 phones for people. People who have zero need or understanding of why but just wanted it so they could be in the cool crowd. Didn't even install cyan or any other rom... Yesterday, wasn't actually geeky but more handy. Installed rear wheel bearings in '97 Ford Probe.

Re-calibrated and installed the software for some Varian Spectra 2020's Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers. ~ Finished the contract, (after 10 months) for the torpedo guidance project for the Dept. of Defense. Nothing out of the ordinary for me.

Now I know who to call when mine needs calibrated, I hate when it's out of spec...

**Actually googled Varian, seems they do a lot in the medical field.

  13. Good effort though man.

My handy work wasn't as ambitious as yours. In effect I was customizing a minty boost by attaching a solar panel to it. It works, although charging anything takes ages.

    The pic is attached.

  14. Of course! Its all about the love of the game. My solar panel costs about the same as one out of the box but it was the challenge of making it and the satisfaction of seeing it work. Plus the smugness :-D

Geekiest thing... I ordered stuff online. Does that count? LOL

Ooooh I was eyeballing a Windows 8 phone too, although I usually never buy phones when they just come out because they are way too expensive.

They look awesome, don't they? I really want one. I think I'm going to tell my husband I want the HTC one as an early Christmas gift. My 2 year upgrade date was this past May. I've just not felt like using it on anything until I saw these. Now I'm completely OCD about it and have been for about a month. I check every day for any news on the actual release day. LOL

So probably this doesn't technically count as geeky, but I finished decorating my knee scooter, which will be the only way I'm allowed to "walk" for the next four or so months. :-D

I also ordered battery-operated lights and a bow to match the holiday ribbon I bought to decorate it for Christmas, too.

Not terribly geeky, but I did switch my unlocked iPhone 4 from AT&T to StraightTalk Monday. So far, so good . . . but I still can't do Multi-media texting. My geekier son tells me he can fix that for me, though.

Not that I did a lot of MulitMedia texting anyway . . . plain texting, sure, and I can do that still. Happy so far :)

Pulled a 14 month old 3Tb enterprise drive from my 7 bay Thecus Pro NAS because it had failed :cry
The drive still works OK as an external drive but not as RAID 5 in the NAS as the S.M.AR.T. details and drive type info are corrupt. Ran SeaTools over it and found it needed the firmware drive type reset because the information was now in advanced characters that can't be displayed :( This leads the BIOS to report the drive maker and drive type as unknown and it also reports unknown serial and part numbers plus S.M.A.R.T. is disabled as is last block reporting so I first did a low level format and then upgraded the firmware to the current version. Checked again with SeaTools and now everything is OK. Hot swapped the drive back into the NAS and 12 hours later everything is reimaged and the the Thecus OS is reporting all RAID drives 100% healthy :-D :cool :major

Now it is POETS day so my work is done ;) LOL

New geekiest thing: Read an awesome book called: How to write and design web pages today, by Karl Stolley.

It's a fascinating read whether you're trying to build a website, or if you're just into the bits and pieces that make one up. It explains why the things do what they do to generate all the content we take for granted. I like it. A lot.

I think that's the phone my wife just got . . . she loves it so far

I didn't either till I got my first smart phone. It's sending pictures and videos via text messages. I could do it before with AT&T, but there is a setting that is not easily accessed with StraightTalk on an unlocked or un-jailbroken phone. My son says there is a trick that can be used with a t-mobile SIM card but we haven't had a chance to try it yet.

    Hey, Triaxx2...

I'm going to offer my standard mantra here about web pages - don't know if Stolley touched on it, but if not, he should have. ;)

Collected every scrap of info I could on computer punch cards from web sites. Downloaded the pics as well. Made a PDF of the stuff for own amusement.

Then spent time looking to buy blank punch cards. Seems $20/dozen is the going price. I want to make personilized geek cards with them to give to friends. Both of them... :)

Started putting together several gift guides for the website I work for. Not anything out of the ordinary, but this year I'm doing one for alternative gifts...tech and gadgets that benefit developing countries, animals, or people while still letting you have something to put under the tree. I'm really kind of excited about this one. :-D

Well at least it was pizza and not an actual meal or it would be -1, going out to get pizza is neutral.

    :-D

This scoring system is has been proven scientifically to have an accuracy of 92.36% if you didn't know this -1 geek point :-D
