    Emoji

    What the heck?

Where have I been that I have never seen nor heard of this word until 10 minutes ago?

What's wrong with emote. My 14 year old laughed at me...yes laughed...and when I said it was a emote, she said 'what's an emote?':confused

If it makes you feel better, I might have heard it once in passing but I had/have no idea what it was. :-D

Does this mean we'll soon be able to express ourselves on Major Geeks using Godzilla and Hello Kitty? :-D

I just heard it used yesterday. Based on the context of the conversation I thought emoticon.
    I kinda like the word.

Maybe it's because those of us who haven't heard it (yes I'm in that list :-D ) are not 14 year olds who spend 80% of their lives on FB or texting ;) ... also I don't think many of us are Japanese speakers :-D

    Or we're just old :-D

So, what's the deal here? are the guys supposed to be Godzilla and the gals Hello Kitty, or some such? And even so - how does that equate to 'Major Geek'? Doesn't make a lick of sense to me.:confused

Hardly anyone here knows what 'Emoji' are, 'prolly because we aren't 12-15 year old Japanese girls with a fetish for Animae, I'd say. Unless I'm missing something, which aint hard for me to do, LOL

While I am considerably older than 14 and don't speak Japanese, I do spend probably 80% of my life on FB or texting since I had surgery. LOL

I have to own up I sadly knew this term! :(

had an app on my old iPhone that added the Japanese emoji's kinda neat for 10mins.

Now you are grown up Laura and have a WP8 which has none of these critters as far as I know :)

i'm with your daughter - what the heck is an "emote"?

emoticon i've heard, emoji i've heard, plain ole "icon" i've heard, but...an EMOTE?? as a NOUN?!

well, google seems to back you up on that, but i ain't never heard it. surely "emoji" is about 1000x more common?

(not to mention the fact that emote seems to be an entirely DIFFERENT beast, now reading the defintions)

Quick google/bing search will find the term.

I'm old but I know the terms as I have used them on a iPhone 3g.... kinda neat smilies! so to speak.... other phones not so much, I have seen some built into WMP78 but Android dunno.

unfortunately, much of the info online -- incl the wiki article -- has one glaring mistake: emoji IS the japanese word for emoticon, plain and simple. the idea that it refers to a different SET of icons is one of circumstance, not inherent in the WORD. meaning, for example, that japanese would refer to our lesser batch as "emoji", same as their own.

it's the same as with how they refer to batman or dilbert as "manga", whereas we've mangled the word into meaning "japanese style" only.

    -----
i still don't understand the OP's last line. there's nothing "wrong" with emote, noun -- it just doesn't MEAN the same thing as emoji/emoticon.

were you (laura) implying that it DOES?!

YES exactly its a Japanese word and western users of tech have taken it up for the small symbols that create characters on the likes of the iPhone.

Emoji and Emotes are just small characters in part made of Unicode characters or where until pictographs of smilie faces where created.

bit like princess Leia here hehehehe >>>>>> @(-_-)@

Manga (whimsical drawing is the English loose term translation) is a whole new ballgame and a minefield in "Anime"

As for what they do, they are just a bit of FUN to add to a SMS/Text message/email etc

    emoji are; emotes aren't.

emoji/emoticon are icons. emotes are the underlying TRIGGERS which may or may not turn into emoji.

    *frustrated*
    <bangs head>
    ;-)

are all emotes. as is princess tymoshenko there.

in other words LOL is an emoji, *lol* is an emote.

Both are text based and always have been, need to have been on the internet for more than a few years.

Never said in this that emoji and emotes aren't either.....

Japanese for emoji is "e" as in picture + "moji" as in text/characters, emote is text only, generally used in online text based games to emphasise a move or expression.

emoji are small characters; emotes are strings.

as you said in your post. that quote is wrong.

    Merry New Year~!!

My well-meaning dad got me an iPhone for Christmas. Emoji is a free app for iphone only (Apple blows in that direction). My favorite Emoji is a pile of poop that smiles. Unfortunately, no one I know has an iphone, so no smiley poop for anyone.

Oh, "emote" is the verb for "emotion." Ex: "When I saw that an iPhone had arrived instead of a Samsung...I emoted for the rest of the day until I accepted things I could not change."

  28. Sgt. Tibbs

That pile of poop can be used on Facebook, but only in comments. ;)

They can be used anywhere (most websites do allow these things) as the "smiles" used on this forum are emotes/emoji :major

Although I was not meaning Facebook as I don't use that thing.

Just thinking now are emote/emoji/smilies a good thing on a forum or just a waste of time?

Bit of fun maybe and I do not mind them, but do some people over use them?

eye candy is fine; what is unforgiveable is SIGNATURES.

you wanna show how cool you are with an irrelevant quote by some 14th century philospher, do it ONCE, in a SPECIFIC post. not EVERY BLXXDY TIME!!!!

geesh, why do forums tolerate such a collosal waste of space?

from now on i'm going to affix the MAGNA CARTA to all posts i make. that'll show 'em how HIP i am!

Sure, but not all of them work on all sites, as their formats are slightly different or they're not included in the list. I just happen to have discovered within the last week that the smiling pile of poop works on Facebook. Now I have to see if it works here. LOL

    :poop:

    Edit:
There, see? It doesn't work here!

    Indeed Sgt Tibbs

They don't which is why my second post was are they useful, they are a bit of fun and we like fun but useful I think not, I have friends that text emoji's way way too much in their messages.

Facebook, well I'm on it.. was only to find a long lost friend, but now only check that waste of space one every 6mths, weird as I have invites for friends I have never met, I may wish to meet a few of them from the Latin countries but that's a new story.
