I'm sick of begging notices every time I try to read something, just put some damn ads up already and try and hook me up with women or sell me some easy money fake job like every other website does.

    Rant over:-D

Does anyone think wikipedia's days as a donation only based website are numbered? The begging notices have become more and more desperate or at least overt, over the last year.

Would running a single small ad just to cover running costs really strip them of control of the site or impartiality? Has anyone ever donated to wikipedia?

Laura will recognise the content of the wiki page:-D

    Emoji!!! :-D

Yep...I agree. I get sick of it. Either that or create memberships and show ads to those without one. I've never given. Now I sort of feel guilty...or not. LOL

Interesting, I go on wiki a lot and have never seen that or anything like it. Maybe they just know I have no money :-D

I also get the feeling "Emoji" is going to turn into some form of running joke :-D

Agreed, that it's even more annoying having that official Graffiti plastered over the top of the site, than just to take on an Ad or three. If anyone "threatens their autonomy", then Wikipedea doesn't need to take their money and can pull the ad, surely.

Hmmm.... until I read Rikky's post I had never seen the begging screen either :)
I don't get ads on You Tube or Vimeo either, in fact I don't get ads on any sites unless the ads are slipped into the middle of the video as part of the video ;)
I use Adblock Plus for chrome or for firefox LOL
    Cheers :drink

Thanks for responses, I know now it's not just me :)

The most annoying thing when charities ask for money is when they tell you how much to give, between £5-£30:mad That's a lot of money to donate IMO, especially to a none essential service.

They say they have an average donation of £30 so is this the same amount on everybody's message or just mine? I'm wondering if they're using targeted prices depending on the region:confused

The US and canadian versions should have an average of $48 probably rounded off to $50 and Australian dollars should be $46.

I've been seeing the begging screen for a few days, but I ignore it just like I do most ads. I seriously doubt running an ad would interfere with their autonomy...if a person purchasing ad space on your site suddenly controls the content of your site, you have issues with how you've chosen to run your site.

And no, I've never given them money. Any information I get from them (which is most of the time when I need something quick...I do not consider ANY user-contributed information that can be changed by another user pretty much at will to be unassailable fact) is not anything I couldn't find anywhere else, it's just that they pay to show up first in Google results.
