Dead router?

Hello. I've been using my Linksys WRT54GS for a while now. A little over a year ago I had to rearrange some furniture and unfortunately I had to move the router close to the radiator. I think that this finally killed the router today.

My router makes strange buzzing noises intermittently during which the power light is solid green and nothing else is lit on (despite being connected to a computer and to the cable modem). Then it snaps out of that and shows the link to the computer and the cable modem while the green power light blinks very rapidly. It just switches from one state to the other about every 10 seconds or so.

I tried holding the rest button for 30 seconds and I've tried turning the power off and on but nothing seemed to do the trick.

    Is the router dead?

    Thanks

It definitely sounds dead by your experiences, there's very little you can do other than a hard reset by holding the reset button for 30 secs which you tried, the next thing to try is what's known as a 30-30-30 reset I'll link to instead of typing it out, this won't work with all routers.

They only last so long. Electronic equipment only has a finite life span.

Thank you. I've tried the 30-30-30 technique and it didn't work. Looking to purchase the RT-N16 to future-proof. Thanks for your help.

What's wrong with the Asus? It seems that with the new firmware all older issues have been resolved.

It is a 2.4ghz only, and is more of a budget grade router, which means lower end. The Linksys E4200 series is the best rated router out there right now. Also keep in mind that with Wireless-N, you get less distance than you do with Wireless-G or Wireless-B.

If it was my money, I would be going with one of the five on the list that I linked before.

You might see about getting another linksys router and using the dd-wrt firmware on it. I've tried it on several and it works fine. Gives you more functionality for managing your network and devices. you can also use the dd-wrt firmware on other types of routers, but I've found that the linksys is the easiest to deploy.

Thanks for the input. I've purchased the Asus and it's been pretty good.
