Can this burner or HD run in a Win7 machine?

I have an unused Windows/ME era Compaq desktop computer that is no longer usable, due to it's OS. (If you've ever used ME then you'll know what I mean)

The parts I think might be usable (to me at least) are the CD burner and the 40gb hard drive.

    CD-RW Drive 4X CD-RW Drive
Hard Drive 40.0 GB UltraDMA Hard Drive

    It's a Compaq 5008us desktop.

If there is anything to look at I'll be glad to report back.

No hurry on this one. I'm hoping the HD could be used as a 2nd HD in a Win7 machine...maybe the burner as well.

    Thanks.

ps They are still in the case. The OS has been removed. I tried to put Linux on it but lost interest as it was so slow.

Why on earth would you want that CD/RW drive? It is too old and slow! It should work just fine though. even the HDD should work as long as it hooks up to the MB it will work.

An 800MHz CPU is going to be deathly slow running Windows 7. In addition, Win 7 requires at least 1GB of memory to function properly. Your PC has 128Mb standard - even if upgraded to the max of 512Mb, it still wouldn't be enough.

Agreed. Looks like t is time for an upgrade wait a new computer! ;)

Small size for today's OSes and file sizes particularly when you consider you can purchase a USB stick that is 64GB or larger.
Even my external 80GB that I image my computers on is small so I got a 500GB external a few years ago.

Forget about installing the old hard drive in a new computer.

Agreed not to mention that it is probably a ribbon connection vs todays sata. Most if not all modern MB no longer have ribbon connections.

If you want to use the CD and hard drive in your new computer and you don't have an IDE port you could get an inexpensive PCI to IDE or SATA to IDE converter as these work OK with 7.

But why? it would be cheaper to goto goodwill or a thrift store and get a used 32x DVD/CD Rom and HDD. One that is SATA ready.
If I were the OP I would take them to the trash can and just get new stuff. Honestly what is the point in using a 4x CD/ROM any more? It is way out dated and the HDD is just way to small to even be a file backup.

Because he didn't ask if he should or shouldn't do it he asked if it was possible, so I gave a snippet of info that might be useful. I'm sure he has his reasons.

No, I wasn't going to put Win 7 on that old computer. :)

The HD would be handy though as a 2nd drive for holding mapping data instead of loading cd's each time. I can't see not using it again if there's room in a new case for it.

It is a ribbon connection though. The converter fix might work.

I agree, the burner doesn't seem to be worth anything.

    Thanks.

And yes voodoo3rd, you're right. I wasn't asking should I, I was asking could I. I'm not a power user and 40GB of data is a lot for me.
