Hello- I am hoping someone can help me with this dilemma. I ran 'chkdsk /r' and it completed, stating it was clean. Ran the WD DataDiagnostics on the HDD and it passed. The problem is that after the 'chkdsk /r' completed and rebooted, the screen hung at black with a working cursor, and after about 20 min., the Desktop did load past the Windows splash screen. However, icons and the taskbar were missing!... So, I rebooted> F8> Last known good..., and it recovered. Everything, including my Chrome browser and GMail is rather slow in opening tabs.
Ok, went to Start> Run> 'sfc /scannow'> loaded XP Pro SP3 CD and ran that with no issues. Immediately after, Start> Run> 'chkdsk /r' and it was still black screening on me. I thought to go into Recovery Console and 'FIXMBR', but was asked for an Administrator Password, which I had long forgotten. At least the one I had written down upon initial install didn't work.
I have a none Windows icon package I use, programs, and docs & settings that I don't want to lose if I do a Repair of this installation.
Could someone please help me get back to normal?... this machine acts like it has a mind of it's own lately. I do believe that it is free of viral content and have scanned for such, with no detection.
    Thanks a bunch!

Is this the same computer from your other post: XP Pro Weirdness ?? If it is, Goldenskull and I suggested that you visit the Malware Forum. Did you ??

    Typically, chkdsk /F is sufficient.

Did you have a specific reason for running with /R ?

Since you know how to get to the Recovery Console, you can run it from there as follows:
    chkdsk /P

That is the same as with the /F parameter from the CMD prompt.

Yes, I did. The machine is clean. The only diagnostics that haven't been run are ComboFix.
    Thanks!

Well, I have another issue with Recovery Console at present. It has a Admin Password requirement, and apparently I can't remember it- or the one I installed with doesn't work. The only way to clear it is with the security hole when running a repair (Installing Devices=Shift+F10).

Thanks for the input- I'll read your link. Never had an issue from running it from any input source before.

    Try leaving the Password blank.
When you get the prompt, just press Enter

You can manually schedule a boot time chkdsk with error checking.
    • open My Computer and right click on the C: drive
    • click Properties
    • click the Tools tab
    • in the Error Checking box, click Check Now
    • click the check box for Automatically fix file system errors

Just asks for it again... Of further note, how can I get Command Prompt to originate from the drive root?... Ex.- C:\>

Mine sets up like this C:\Documents&Settings\my name>

In this manner, I have to enter 'cd\' to get to the root C:\... Just askin'...

    Thanks!

Using just the ' /F' switch yields the same result- black screen and working cursor on reboot.

NO malware present, and 'sfc /scannow' doesn't correct the anomaly, either. Any more suggestions, please?...

Thanks for any and all input and/or advice!

If you are using a link for CMD.exe in your Start menu or on the Desktop,
right click the link and select Properties.
In the Start in field, type in C:\ and press OK

Have you tried running the disk check from the Tools menu?
right click C: in Explorer > Tools tab > Error-checking > Check Now > check Automatically fix ... > click Start.

Just wondering - is that Non-Windows icon package?

Yes... I stole it from TuneUp Utilities.

UPDATE!...Admin Password in Recovery Console fix:
    HKLM> Software> Microsoft> Windows NT> Current Version>
SetUp> Recovery Console: Change Security Level Value Data
    from 0x00000000 to 0x00000001.

Removes password requirement and directs to root.

As far as the 'chkdsk' issue goes, I may be onto something. From 'cmd', I ran 'fsutil query dirty c:' and came up clean. However, let's take a look at this from a registry perspective:

HKLM> System> CurrentControlSet> Control> SessionManager> BootExecute data should be set to 'autocheck autochk *', which it was, BUT!, it had also included 'smart defrag boot time' included at the end. This was from the Iobit Smart Defrag prog I was using, but Revo'd in favor of Piriform's Defraggler. Apparently the registry clean up in Revo missed this.
Now, I haven't run 'chkdsk' yet to verify this, but I think all is well within the disk as there were no dirty elements in 'fsutil', drive status is good and healthy within Windows Disk Management, Piriform's Drive Check, and WD's Data Lifeguard diagnostics.

At this point, I am going to leave it alone for now, hunt for a new MOBO and CPU combo and new HDD at a reasonable price for this XP machine, and clean install the OS. Ya know, 'Like a virgin... for the very first time!'... LOL!

    Thanks for the help everyone!

    Thanks for the update.
Good work on finding that Smart Defrag boot time leftover.
