lubuntu/webcam/flash player confusion

Im running the latest lubuntu on an acer aspire laptop. GUVCViewer and other similar apps can drive my camera, and it works fine, locally. However, I just cant get my webcam/mic to stream to webcam chat sites. I have adobe flash player installed, because the open source ones would not even play flash videos on the web. Adobe does that, however it does NOT give me the popup window asking for permission to access my camera/mic. I'm not sure if flash is the problem or what?
I've tried many things, nothing has worked.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Did you install cheese?

    Here is Cam wiki.

I have done this, but little time for now.
Post your journey so we can help. (we hope!)

Ok, thanks I will check it out. The computer im having cam problems with is my laptop, I'm on my desktop now - and having issues with distorted/staticky sound! (Both have newly installed lubuntu)
Being new to linux, it's pretty satisfying to troubleshoot and successfully fix things, but it's frustrating when I can't seem to get something fixed.

    mea culpa! :-o

I gave you the directions for Ubuntu. YOU are running lubuntu with LXDE and so the solution is deeper. Lubuntu has a distant cousin I enjoyed- Crunchbang.

There is this thread on the crunchbang forums, and this link that may help.

    ;)

Thanks, I will check those out. I think for the sound issue i will uninstall/reinstall ALSA and see if that helps. I'm dealing with some health issues so progress may be a bit slow but I'll get there. Thanks for the links, I'll let you know.

Ok time to get my cam working. I will start with my desktop and the old logitech cam.

But lubuntu is nothing more than ubuntu with the LXDE. So its still debian based, and not open SUSE.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Ok, with cheese installed, I can see my cam locally, but at http://www.testwebcam.com/ , it isnt finding a camera. So, cheese and guvcview both give me a cam stream locally, but flash isnt seeing the camera. Yet. Researching right now. . . .
    Any suggestions are welcome

Ok. On the laptop, http://www.testwebcam.com/ recognizes the cam and it works on that page. However, the site I would like to use my cams on, http://chatforfree.org/videochat/chat.html, will not give me the flash window requesting access to my cam/mic, and I am still unable to use the site. .
Would this be an issue with my firefox plugin or flash itself?
I'm going to try it on chromium real quick.

Ok I fixed the sound distortion problem.
    Still struggling with webcam/flash

Crunchbang is Debian based and Philip was active on the Ubuntu forums heavily before he developed #!

There is an Open SUSE LXDE version and the solutions are sometimes the same when you have the wrong file associations. This is common with Firefox and Flash plugins when updated in Linux.

After a while you get pretty good at debugging the hardware.

    :confused Philip? :confused

I almost went with #!, but decided on lubuntu to replace W7 on a cheap wal-mart acer laptop which ran painfully slow & laggy with W7. I liked it so much that I installed it on my main desktop. (Phenom 2 x4 & HD6970)
I did a ton of tweaking last night, and managed to fix the sound issues on the desktop, I never could figure out the webcam issues, although I got other things done while trying to fix that.
So far, I'm finding that the open source stuff I've tried generally doesnt work as well (or at all) than the proprietary counterpart. Maybe I'm not doing it right,.

In my tweaking frenzy last night, I wound up with the plugins as shown in the attached pic.
Note the descriptions for the plugins. Are these going to conflict with each other and cause issues? I'm only using one of these on the laptop, and didnt notice any difference in functionality.

Oh ha. To fix the sound, I uninstalled/reinstalled ALSA. I also had to dump VLC because it's sound was still acting up, but have started trying out some media players I havent tried before instead of just reinstalling VLC. I like VLC because I can use it for both video and audio (I insist on having an EQ for both videos and audio) but havent yet found a player like that, so at the moment Im just using MPlayer for vids and Audacious for audio. Bangarang's UI was awful IMO, and I dont like the way ENNA forces me to navigate playlists, nor could I find an EQ.
Other things I did during the process was installing openJDK and its browser plugin, which doesnt appear to work. I did lots of appearance/color/style tweaks, but for the life of me cant get the Firefox on my desktop to display all websites with black background the way it is on my laptop. I wish I knew what the heck I did to get that done rolleyes .
I'm sure I left stuff out but lunch is over . . .

Ok back to work on the webcam issues.
Im gonna start on the desktop with the old Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000
I guess i"ll look for a linux driver for it ? Not sure what else to do, any suggestions would be welcome.

Oh, im confused about this Philip fellow. Is he a memeber here?
Or are you name dropping, cause if you are one time I met Yao Ming. LOL (j/k)

I wonder if I need FFD show ? Ill give that a shot. According to what im reading, ive already got 3 drivers that give me a stream locally. http://www.testwebcam.com/ does not recognize the cam.
Do i need to have one of the drivers running (GUVC for example, or cheese) when I try to stream to the chat site?
I'm going to install FFD show
Maybe the driver is sending the wrong video protocol?
So many question, so few brain cells. Thanks for you help guys!

Got Firefox looking the way I like. I copied the pres.js file from my laptop and replaced the pref.js file in the Firefox files. Still struggling with the cams :confused

No name dropping. Philip is not a member here, but is known as the creator of #!

A Google Search for "Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 lxde" fiinds this thread on page 2. Google is sometimes your friend, and I see links to the LinuxMint and Ubuntu Forums. both may provide help quicker.

You start by firing up terminal and issuing
    Code:
    lsusb
to see where the cam is talking to the system. You then could unplug and look at
    Code:
    dmesg
while you plug in the cam and that will tell you what errors need to be solved..

VLC....well you may have some Gnome native dependancies that are missing in LXDE. I had that running Firefox on KDE and settled on a Gnome based WM. Again, specific LXDE areas of the various forums may help much.

I have dug and dug through google/bing/DDG - you name it, and i get all sorts of different instructions for what im trying to do, all different.
When I go to the adobe flash site, it tells me that my installed version is out of date, I suspect this is where the real problem is.
It prompts me to download the newest version, but its an "apt" url. I installed apturl to handle it, but it errors out and wont let me download the version it says I need.
In the lubuntu software center, it shows that i have the flash player plugin installer, but i cant find where it is on my system ........????
I used catfish file locator and still cant find it.
ok i need to bail. I'll be back !
    Thanks again!
oh and I will try the codes you supplied.
I'm gonna get this sh*t straight if it kills me LOL

Well the only way to get the best flash player is by using adobe's latest. But they stop developing there standalone client, if I remember you can only get up to 11 something that's the last I heard on that so getting more up to date is kinda hard when the main devs stopped because they were just going with MS.

I believe this is happening because of the development of Chrome OS taking a large market share, and this is the way Microsoft is trying to stop it.
