I found the site <snip> that says the programs it installs are legitimate virus remove programs. I ran it and my computer is faster now, but I was wondering if someone could scan the file that it downloads and see if it has a virus in it or if it is really legitimate.

Hello and welcome to Major Geeks. While we are a community of tech savvy people, we do have a lot of people coming for help who are not.

Please do not post questionable links on our forums. If you would like to scan a file, you can use this site: https://www.virustotal.com/ It uses a number of utilities to determine safety of an executable file.

Greetings, nick2, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

I ran the website in question through VirusTotal and it appears to be benign. I cannot run the file through because it is too large (VirusTotal has a 32 mb limit).

I strongly advise to not download and run such software, however, unless you are absolutely sure that the software is safe. There are many "rogue" antivirus programs on the 'net, and the MajorGeeks Malware Removal Forum is constantly populated with users infected by these programs. You may have gotten lucky - the program is apparently an amalgam of RKill, Malwarebytes, Kaspersky Rootkit removal, Norton Power Eraser, and Microsoft Security Essentials - but in the future please beware.

***Oops - sorry guys - didn't see you lurking...

Edit; to see if editing is breaking something...

    Thanks!

I ran the program and it fixed my computer(i think).. After i ran it i posted the question here because i wasn't sure if there was something in it that may be dangerous.

I will follow up in a day or 2 to let you know how things are working

Not a prob, cipher. I deleted it as I had already posted the info for them and didn't want them reposting it in Software. :) I'm leaving Caliban's as he scanned it for nick2.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I think an important distinction needs to be made:

@nick2, you ran the urls through VirusTotal - the two addresses that you listed are for the website and for the program downloader. The program itself, however, cannot be scanned by Virus Total because of file size restrictions.

Again: the fact that that you have installed and run the program with no apparent adverse effects is a good thing. I am glad you got lucky this time, but in my opinion it would be a much safer practice in the long run to use reputable file repositories (such as MajorGeeks.com) for your downloads, especially those concerning security software. ;)

The auto-download on the site is a wrapped package of (currently - links are to virustotal results):
    TDSSKiller 2.7.34.0
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.65.1.1000
MSEInstall.exe x86 4.1.522.0 Warning..................: Possibly corrupt Version resource.
MSEInstall.exe x64 4.1.522.0 Warning..................: Possibly corrupt Version resource
    Norton Power Eraser 3.1.1.10
    rkill.exe 2.4.5.0
    Along with a batch file.

I don't see this as being legal or safe, I'm pretty sure the creators of these programs did not intend, nor have they allowed, the softwares to be used in this way, especially not without full details and necessary warnings.

Running this package on an infected machine could lead to an unbootable machine - or worse.

Which is worse, an unbootable machine or an infected machine? Either way I would be dropping $75 at the computer shop.

I've researched the programs that it installed and most people say you should run some, if not all of them. Its a big help to have them all in one download. Is there somewhere else that i can get a one shot cleaner for my computer if it gets infected again?
