    Hello
Someone kindly sent me an email with a link for my office Suite which I click on which and it takes me to a .exe file.
I clicked on that file and saved it to desktop It took 8 minutes.

How do I save the important part for future installations. I will never find this information again.

I learned I cannot burn a .exe as it will be read only.

So far I copied the link to get to the exe file with Word and printed it out.I also copied the shortcut to the link which I also printed out.

Is there anything else I can do, maybe electronically to disc, to help me get to this file when this pc is formatted.
    Thank you
    Peter

Just copy and paste the file from your desktop to some other drive - CD, flash, external, anything other than your C drive as that is about to be wiped. There is little point saving the link to the file unless you are sure the site will still be there next time you want this file. As the file is so important to you you should save it to two different media.

Be sure to scan this file with your AV before using it.

I'd burn the exe file to a CD (burn as data). That way, when you are ready to reinstall, put the CD in, and run the exe from the CD.

    >>The link to the file was in my inbox. When clicked, it took me to the file. When the file is clicjked it puts an icon on the desktop after 8 minutes.
I printed both the link in the inbox and the target of the file to locate both again.
    I have scanned for virus.
I want to try it your way. So I right click the file and see 'save target as' and 'save shortcut' but am not sure what to click. When it is time to burn, should I choose master or usb?
    Thanx again

Must admit to being unsure just what it is you now have on your desktop. Sounds like a shortcut to something rather than the exe file I assumed it was. (you can copy exes btw, just like any other file).

What happens if you left click it or double click it? If it wants to run don't let it, but try to explain exactly what does happen.

Where did you read this? I'm almost absolutely sure that's not true; a .exe file can by executed from a CD. I'm sure I've done this in the past. This capability seems clearly implied at http://www.ehow.com/how_8765704_burn-exe-file.html

EXE files can be put on CD and DVD media without any problem.
Yes it can be "read" and therefore run from the CD.

If the disk is not "closed" after writing, making it a multi-session disk, you can later burn a new/different version of the file.

peter - gave a bit of thought to this overnight and as you say it was 8 minutes before it appeared on your desktop then it must have been a file that was being downloaded - you weren't just saving a hypertext link to a file somewhere else - and in that case the file must be on your computer somewhere, if not on the desktop then somewhere else like Downloads perhaps.

If you know the exact name of the file then try doing a search for it. The Everything search tool would find it.

    Let us know.

Gosh, I am sorry to cause so much trouble.
I will show you 2 prntscrns.
The blue icon is the 8 minute .exe I downloaded by double clicking on the other file labled Office file.

I really hope this clears things up.

    I was hoping for 2 choices;
1- Best = save something to disc that would allow me to double click and install Office in the future as i am formatting.
    or
2- keeping the source of the file on disc so I can find it again.

So far I have printed the link to the office file and printed the location of the file itself.(right click, copy target)

Right click the icon in your first screenshot and tell us how large it is.
The beta was around 700MB so I suspect if your file is in the hundreds of megabytes, it is the Office Suite complete.

    There are 3 files
1-a blue icon that took 8 minutes to down load and is labled X17-75161 -I cannot upload it but you can see it in the green pik.
2- the Office file is the one I can click to install Office
My goal is to be able to install ofiice in the future with my product key.
I don't know what I am to save and how to save it.

I do have printed out the locations of the link and the file using "save target as" and maybe that will do the job.
I did not knownif i burned the X17 one if i could use it to install Office?
Thanx for all your help and if this doensn't do it please realax and I will figure it out. The inordinate amount of time on me is emabarssing but appreciated.

If the Office File is the installer then that's the one you need to right click and copy and paste to a flash drive or some other medium. Would be good to get confirmation though by answering plodr's question as to how big it is,

It is 1.05 GB that is why i could not upload it to show you.

If I can "send to " a cd to burn do I use master or usb?

I am sorry I missed the question.

If you want to be able to use the CD for writing other files to it use Live File System, otherwise use Mastered. Don't you have a flash drive or external USB drive you could use for this? CDs get lost/damaged.

1.05 GB will not fit on a CD!!! Don't try.

Thanx Plodr. I knew about the 640 mb vs the 5 Gb but made a slip of the term.
I appreciate the heads up. I received the link from MS last night and am keeping that link aside. If it changes I will call again. There is a interesting article out about 64 pc's being better off with the 32 bit download;don't believe it as I formatted last year and 64s need the 64.
