I have Win 8 and want to set my wife up on her laptop. Would it be advisable to get a Hotmail or MS account or is it not necessary. I ask because we requested a Media Pack prod key but never got it.

Free Media Pack keys can take a few days so be patient. You don't need to set up a Microsoft account to use Win 8. You can use a local account. That's what I've done as I don't want a permanent connection to all that MS stuff.

    >>I will wait and thank you for the heads up about the MS account I got the first time. I did change it to 'local' by clicking, "Change pc settings." But why go thru all that.

You still have to have a Live account in order to download stuff from the store, but no need to use it when logging into the computer. The whole idea, is that it backs up your common user settings, creating in sense a Roaming user account, such as was the case back when Win2k was in use.

Microsoft is just creating a domain type environment for Win8, but not really needed if you do not want to use that feature.

I did not know why this is set up the way it is and I thank you for the explanation.
I have vacillated yet will make up my mind one of these days.
