I fully realize that this is not the forum's first BSOD post. I just became a member of the forum yesterday 12/17/2012. I hope it can help me.

I have searched the forum and there are obviously other BSOD posts. None of them could really help my specific problems.

I have been having the BSOD on my 3rd new computer build (os: WIN 7 Professional). It has been occurring about 4 times a day for the past 6 months. Some days will go by with no issues, but very few days with that freedom. My BSOD's occur 99% of the time while the computer is resting and not being used. I will come back to it and log in and then be informed that Windows crashed and restarted.

The forum has led me to believe that you need files before you can really help.

I have run SF Diag and the files are attached to yesterday's post titled "SF Diag - no folder on desktop".

Please accept my apology for posting this issue twice. I realize it is probably a 'no-no'; but I felt the post was getting lost in the shuffle. Next time I post I will study more before I post and be better prepared.

Please try to help me. I don't want to ruin this computer.

    Kind Regards,

    Dekade

Hi my friend , you must download this tool

    http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

    Go to

from the left side you must opt for menu
Summary ( wait 30 seconds until report is generated )
you have to select Report from bar menu
from sub menu Quick Report - Plain Text - opting for Desktop as saving location , follow this

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

even during start up you are able to push F8 go to

    Advanced Boot Options

selecting Disable Automatic restart on system failure

in the next time in which bsod is appeared you will be able to give us the stop error code :wave

Thanks to the two previous replies. I will be following your instructions this afternoon at about 1:30pm CDT USA.

I'm pretty cedrtain I will have some procedure questions at that time.

This means a lot to me to have access to your knowledge.

    Kind Regards,

    Falconattack,

I seem to not be able to access an Advanced Boot Options screen. Pressing F8 directs me to a Boot Menu where I can choose which drive I want to boot to.

What should I do to get to Advanced Options?

You can try different keys such as F1 , F2 , F12 etc to enter in Advanced Boot Oprions :wave

    Satro,

I have disabled EVGA Precision X in WIN7. However, that was the means by which I kept my Nvidia GTX250 video card cooler. EVGA Pre X had a control to adjust the fan speed on the card so that it would stay cooler.

Any suggestions for another fan controller?

F12 did the job. I have Disabled Automatic restart.

Next, did you see the reply I gave to Satrow?

Attached is the report you told me to run.

So what do I do now? Just sit and wait for another BSOD? What if none happens for a few days? Do I then assume that the elimination of the EVGA Precision X application was the problem? If so, do you have any input on keeping my GTX250 video card from getting hot?

I also wanted to add that 5 weeks ago i ran 14 hours of MemTest86 to check out the RAM. No errors.

    FalconAttack,

Just checking to see if you have any more advice for me and whether or not you have looked at the files I have attached.

By the way - Thanks for all of your help to this point.

    UPDATE: BSOD Occurred

A BSOD finally occurred. I read and wrote down the blue screen. Then I ran SF Diag. Attached are those files.

At the top of the blue screen it did say "Memory_Management". I don't know if the following comments relate to that or not. About four or five weeks ago I ran MemTest86 on my memory. Left it run all night long with all four 1GB sticks in place. After 9 passes there were 'no errors'.

Could someone please let me know what my report attachments are saying about the BSOD?

Hopefully I am getting closer to seeing what is going on. Hope your analysis will help.

I did uninstall EVGA Precision control the same day 'satrow' suggested that the EVGA program had been a known cause for WIN 7 BSOD's. A BSOD did not take place until today following the EVGA uninstall. I thought I had my BSOD problem solved - but, I guess not. That was the longest period of time without a BSOD for about 6 months.

    I anxiously await further instructions

    Thanks,

    Dekade

Still looks like the RAM/slots need testing individually from a CD/bootable USB, see post #2.

Run Driver Verifier for ~24-48 hours of Windows usage, don't run anything too stressful, just use the PC as usual. Read and follow the post very carefully.

    Satrow -

Firstly, please accept an apology from me. I quickly looked at this reply when I first saw it. I'm not too bad with computers but definitely no pro like yourself. I simply did not realize the extent, via this reply, to which you were trying to help me.

That being said, I don't understand what you want me to do with the link for the "RTCore64.sys". I did follow the link but still am not certain what to do with the link.

As I go through some trouble shooting with you folks I have every intention of performing the tasks you request of me.

HOWEVER, as I go I want to learn. Respectfully requesting: Could you please explain to me WHY I am doing the things you want me to do?

1.) The RTCore64.sys issue I do not understand why I should go to that.
2.) Today's reply from you on Driver Verifyer I don't understand the why of running it and what I should be looking for during it's run.

IMPORTANT: I am in the middle of my second stick of RAM testing. As of pass 5 there are no errors. NEXT - VERY IMPORTANT: Last night I ran the first stick of RAM. After checking at 4 passes before I went to bed there were no errors. I continued to let it run for 9 more hours until I got up this morning.
The attached photos show you what I woke up to.

What do you make of the MEMTEST84 v4.0 pictures I took?

Are we getting closer in your opinion?

    Thanks,

    Dekade

Any memory error means that the stick or slot (or the timings set in BIOS) is bad. It looks like you used MemTest86, try MemTest86+, it's better imo.

Start Menu\Programs\EVGA Precision X < this is the likely source of RTCore64.sys, the link is there for interest, it may contain further useful info. Any driver that is known to be problematic (for some Users) with your Windows version needs to be removed during testing.

All we're trying to do is rule out any likely factors, running DV will pick out any other 'bad' drivers that are installed.

It's all about %'s, if something is known to cause problems, remove it from the equation then test again.

As it stands, it seems like your #1 stick of RAM is bad - though it could be the slot - if you tested stick #2 in the same slot then you have the culprit pinned down ;)

    Thanks so much,

I did run both sticks in the same slot (slot 1 - furthest to the left; ASUS P5N-D MoBo)

Right now I am going to download MEMTEST86+ and run the first stick again. By the way, the second stick was just now on it's 8th pass and no errors.

Well, I thought ( remind you I thought ) that all of my ram proved out very successfully. And to the best of my observation of more than 8 passes each stick of 2GB - it all did pass.

'I think' I have done everything in this thread asked of me and I am ready to proceed on to solve this issue.

However, just received a PFN_List_Corrupt BSOD.

I do not know how to use Driver Verifier. Could you or someone else direct me through it?

For a long time I have sensed the culprit of a bad nVidia driver. I remember long ago when things started to go funky in photo and video editing programs after a nVidia update.

MAYBE - the before paragraph is the problem. Where could I go to get an old 195.xxx.xx nVidia driver? I am running a Ge Force GTS 250 card. Should I even consider that path?

Any productive direction of proceeding would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dekade

Dekade...just as a note. Of the 50 crashes you submitted, the culprit process was one of the following ones (number of times in ())

    fltmgr.sys
    Ntfs.sys
    hal.dll
    win32k.sys (2)
    Ntfs.sys
    ntoskrnl.exe (44)

As these are all Windows processes and files, I submit that running a repair of your OS could solve this problem. You could be on the right track about the driver you mentioned, but it may be causing the problem by having altered Windows in an unacceptable way. Just an idea for down the road.

When I have had blue screens, most of them were the ntoskrnl.exe ones. Don't know if it means anything, but I only have them now when I unplug an external TV tuner I have to reset it when it sticks. It only happens when I unplug/replug too quickly. The minidump usually does blame/point to the tuner driver, though.

Just some thoughts on blue screens.

The repair option I mentioned does not get rid of your files or programs. Only updates are lost with a repair installation. You must have a disk installation copy of the OS, however, to perform a repair install. It won't run from a restore option.

EDIT: ran across this on a page which points users to a software purchase. This was the last option for fixing a FltMgr.sys error like the first one in your minidump bundle:

"If you are receiving this error constantly, and have tried all the above solutions, it could well be that your system is actually corrupted. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as a power failure during an update or a virus that has corrupted files on your PC.

A repair of Windows is generally a good idea if you feel that the fltmgr.sys file is corrupt. It will replace the file with a fresh one and also provide a smoother system to operate with. You will need to use your Windows CD that came with your system to repair your system."

Pretty good endorsement of the Windows repair option considering the whole point of the page containing this information was devoted to manipulating users to link to a pay software title. There was no link in this statement.

    Atlbo,

Thank you very much for the reply.

Firstly, what is "ntoskrnl.exe" (44) and what purpose does it serve in the OS?

I do have a Win 7 Professional OS disk. Is it safe to do a 'repair'? Meaning - should I or should I not back up all of my files? Do I simply boot to the disk? Could I loose the OS through a repair? That would probably be a big mess, eh?

Is there a reliable text document that you know of that accurately and correctly directs the steps of an OS repair?

On the Windows 7 repair option...here is some information that might help you. You do not lose files or settings:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/f/repair-installation-windows.htm

Above also has links to how tos for running the installations in Windows 7.

    Here is info on ntoskrnl.exe:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntoskrnl

    and on the kernel:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntoskrnl

A good video at YouTube on fixing a ntoskrnl.exe blue screen problem:

    http://youtu.be/2c0onEJXU2E

The parts of the video on testing your hard might interest you the most since you have already tested your memory. You may want to test your HD before you run the Repair Installation for 7, but that's sort of up to you. Not sure about Windows 7, but in XP the Repair option removes updates which have to be reinstalled. Even if so on 7, it's still only a small price to pay to see if the problem is the software. You can still test the HD later.

On step 9 oif the WIN 7 repair process it mentions to NOT boot from the WIN 7 DVD. Am I correct in the following?

BEFORE starting anything I should go into the BIOS and disable the DVD drive as the primary boot drive; correct? Otherwise reboots would then go to the WIN 7 DVD - correct?

Therefore, I want to be able to push a key to boot from DVD drive just the first time through only. Correct?

  27. AtlBo

    AtlBo Major Geek Extraordinaire

Dekade...I believe you should be OK if you just remove the DVD from the DVD drive when you get to this juncture and before approving a reboot. If a reboot happens automatically, just remove the disk before the BIOS finishes loading.

If you know how to complete the earlier steps (i.e. boot from the DVD drive when it isn't the primary drive) with the DVD disk disabled, you could go that way.

I think the main thing is to make the correct choice in step 4. "Install Now" is the obvious choice, but the repair option is sort of out of the way there on the menu. I guess that would be a good time to think twice and just make sure you click on the repair option as per the picture there in step 4. Also, step 8 says to remove flash drives and other USB storage devices. That seems important to me.

Okay, one final question. I run the Logitech MK700/Mk710 wireless mouse and keyboard. It requires as a USB dongle. That should be okay to leave inserted shouldn't it? I have no USB storage devices that are installed on a semi or permanent basis.

The mouse shouldn't be a problem. I think the concern had to do with USB storage devices, which can apparently be misread by Windows during the installation...

    Atlbo,

    Are you online?

I think I need some help on this repair procedure. At step 5 the computer said that it had found some errors and then asked if I would like to repair and restart. So I removed the DVD and clicked on Repair and Restart. The computer then paused for a second or two, restarted, and booted into Windows 7 Professional and that was it. No steps AFTER step 5 were performed. Have I done the repair procedure correctly or not?

  31. AtlBo

    AtlBo Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Dekade...hello

Sounds like you made it through the entire procedure. I am basing this assertion on the text in step 9 of the tutorial. Here's the link:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/windows-7-startup-repair_9.htm

Sounds like you went straight by the book. I assume you got to step 6 where you select the Windows 7 installation to repair. You did indicate, however, that the process seemed to you to have skipped steps. Did you ever see the menu in step 7?

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/windows-7-startup-repair_7.htm

At any rate, I think the process may be somewhat dynamic in that it might vary depending on what the repair program finds.

At this point, I guess the best thing to do would be to wait to see if the problem has been fixed. If not I would recommend trying the repair again...this time you can pull the disk out when you get to the BIOS load. Really all you have to do is push the button to eject the disk, so it shouldn't be too hard to time...

Does the machine seem to be performing better?

  32. Dekade

    Dekade Sergeant

    AtlBo,

The process never went past step 5.

    It searched for an installation.

Then it said that it found errors.

Then it asked if I wanted to repair and restart.

I clicked OK for repair and restart.

Now - further information. Step 6 and step 7 were never reached, let alone, 9 and 10. So, I never got to choose the installation to perform the repair on.

I have a few drives that are partitioned. Attached you can see a picture of those partitions.

I would certainly assume that Drive 2 contains my WIN 7 OS as the 'C' partition. The 'C' partition is where all of the programs are, thus it must be my OS.

I can't remember what Disk 1 'F' Drive is. I thought sure that I bought the 1GB Samsung HDD to house the WIN 7 OS but I guess it doesn't.

Thus - the above said - is my partitioning possibly why all of the steps were not performed? Wouldn't the WIN 7 OS DVD function from the 'C' partition?

What do you think of everything?

    Dekade

    Attached Files:

    Dekade:

I wouldn't worry that the steps got skipped, and I don't think your partitions would have caused any problems. I think what happened was that Windows 7 Repair found some problems on a deeper level and fixed those (maybe in some files Repair depends on to function correctly). Either that or the repair located the Windows 7 partition on its own (if you only have one of those).

I would run the Repair again and see if it gives you the option to select an installation of Windows. Basically try again and see if you can get to here:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/windows-7-startup-repair_6.htm

In any event, your Windows 7 installation will be idenified as such if you can get to step 6 to choose it...:)

    Thanks AtlBo,

I will say this - the computer is running a heck of a lot better. I notice improved speed particularly when I refresh this forum and another forum on relational databases. It used to take 60 seconds sometimes to refresh. Now we are down to maybe 3 seconds at the most.

    Something must have gotten fixed.

The night before I ran the Repair my GeForce GTS 250 video card bit the dust. Really threw the computer into a tizzy complete with noises and blackouts and tons of beeps. Quite the trip. As you may remember I mentioned my curiosity about the drivers earlier anyway.

So, I put in a spare GeForce 7600S. I don't do games, just general computing, so the 7600 is performing great - as it is running a much older driver and I have decided to not upgrade it. I do think there is a problem potentially with the last 5 or 6 upgraded nVidia drivers and their compatibility with some builds.

I will run another repair in the next day or so and bring you up to speed on those results.

    Thanks again,

Thumbs up Dekade. Happy to hear it's running better. Please do update, and hopefully the improvement will last...

Just looking at your HD information. Everything looks really good. I don't like bogging HDs with a high % of data. 29% like on yours is where I like to be, although I'm more like 40% right now. Been that way for awhile, so I need to get a 500 GB HD I guess.

Smart to save that backup video card. That was a nice turn.

Dekade...if you feel up to it...you say your net speed here is about 3 seconds. That's pretty good, but I recommend this:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Process_Lasso_d4050.html

    and

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/GBoost_d6725.html

These are killer optimizers. I waited years for optimizer software, and they are finally here and freeware too. Awesome programs. Talk about smooth power.

Lasso is amazing and totally impressive. I run it on the gaming mode. GBoost is what you'd expect from a gaming optimizer, but it's the best one I've used by a pretty wide margin. Press the silver arrow at the bottom to go over the settings choices. Just for the record, I have 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 14, and 15 set to off. Those are the ones that really don't change anything all that much. If you have a browser open, it will close it when GBoost opens. It doesn't keep you from using programs while it's on or turn them off. Only when it's started up.

Both of these blow away Windows run time optimization routines. I put them on my dad's Pentium 4 1.7 GHz...it was like whoa! I have them on a c. 2007 core2duo. Smokin' stuff...

Looking forward to hearing how it goes over time with this. I'll keep both sets of fingers crossed...

    Dog Gone It! More BSOD's!!!!!!!

Just this morning I ran Windows Repair twice and both times made it all the through the 10 steps in the procedure. :) :)

Then 10:00am this morning [01/11/2013] - BSOD #1 "Memory_Management". So I wrote Mushkin for an RMA on my two sticks of PC2 6400 DDR2 800. They okay'd the RMA. Then I ordered 2 x 2GB of G Skill PC2 6400 DDR2 800 from Newegg; So I can run the machine while RMA for Mushkin is processing. Same CAS and same timing and same voltage. Then I can have 8GB when I finally get the Mushkin back. They should work together well even though they are different manufacturers - don't you think likewise?

    5:55pm [01/11/2013] (a few minutes ago) BSOD #2 "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_ EQUAL".

Good grief!!!!!! Any ideas from these two BSOD's????????? Do you think I'm moving towards a OS reinstall? Or - I hate to say this - how do I find out if the motherboard is haywire or not? ASUS P5N-D with 2x Intel Pentium III Xeon, 2833 MHz CPU. Man Idread the thought of that. Finances are starting to run out on this issue if you know what I mean. Many times "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_ EQUAL" is due to hardware conflict/failure or bad drivers.

You seem to have the RAM sticks on order, so have a look at your drivers. Specifically that new to you GeForce 7600S... You can always roll back the driver...

Yes, I think cipher is on the right track there. Very good idea...

agreed...pretty nice work on that RAM deal there. You will just want to make sure you install the memory correctly. Make sure you set up the memory to take advantage of the dual channel capability. See here:

    http://www.ehow.com/how_6513168_asus-sli-dual-channel-memory.html

If I understood correctly your situation, place one of the 2 sticks of the same manufacturer in a yellow and one in a black for both sets. You can check this by downloading CPU-Z. After boot, open CPU-Z and in the memory tab, channels# should say dual.

OK...have you run a test of your hard drive, yet? I can't remember. The manufacturer will have one you can run. Find out who made your hard drive....see here how:

    http://voices.yahoo.com/how-find-out-information-hard-drive-4074601.html

Then Google "{manufacturer} hard drive test". That should do it for you. Just find the download and run the test...

Hopefully it's not the motherboard, but gotta go through everything else to find out basically...

Right now I have the 2 Mushkin - each in a yellow slot. When I get the second set do you mean the following? -1 Mushkin yellow, 1 Mushkin black; 1 GSkill yellow, 1 GSkill black????

The hard drive is a Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ. Samsung is now owned by Seagate. Just got an email from them with the correct HDD diag test. Have not run it yet. Ran a "light weight" test yesterday from Seagate because I could not locate the diag for the Samsung. Just a note of clarification - I had a GeForce GTS250 Graphics Card in the computer for about 1-1/2 years. It crashed the other night (01/06/2013) - OR - at least it appeared to do so. Made a lot of buzzing noise come from the computer speakers and also caused a huge quantity of display blackouts and flickering within a 60 second period. Might have been the RAM or the current driver.

Anyway, I took it out and replaced it with one of two standby old GeForce 7600S's used a few years back.

I am going online now to see if I can find a much older driver yet for the 7600S. I remember that I never had issues on this computer with graphics until I passed by the 195.xx.xx set of drivers (to the best of my recollection).
