Interested to hear your opinion about this --

How necessary is it to disable Java?

    Thanks.

Not. Just let it go and move on. Critical update from Oracle for their products, including Java is on the 15th. If it was so bad, that means we also have to toss all devices that use embedded Java, like Smart Tv's, Blu-Ray players, cell phones, etc..

Well -- I went to the Control Panel to disable Java in browsers but the Java Applet was no longer there. Java was still listed as installed in the Add/Remove Programs though. I have now uninstalled it.

I also was noticing the computer seemed to be having some problems recently and ran Eset, which found a virus.

My JAVA CP icon has disappeared too.
    Explore to C:\ProgramFiles\Java\jre7\bin
In there you will see javacpl.exe
Click on it and you will get the Java Control Panel popup with the 5 Tabs. Click on the Security tab and you can disable for all browsers.

I had uninstalled the whole program. I reinstalled it and it put the applet back in the control panel, but there wasn't anything under the "Security" tab to disable browsers. There were settings in the "Advanced" tab for it though.

I saw that an update was available (to Java 7 update 11), so I updated it. Then there was an option in the "Security" tab to disable browsers. It also had a slide to adjust the security level, which it didn't have before the update.

I've completely uninstalled it too in all systems here, so far without any issues at all. While I can manage without it I shall continue to do so.

    Agree, prudent course of action...

I took it off all my machines when the alert came out. I understand there is a patch, but so far nothing I'm doing requires Java. So under the principle that simpler is better, I'll not install Java again until/unless I have to.

I support an accounting firm that has many cloud based programs that use Java. Disabling for us is not an option.

Chrome has a Click to Play option for plugins so you can very easily say yes when required.

When I tested the Mozilla version of Click to Play, it wasn't completely successful but maybe Chrome's version is better. Enabling/disabling a plugin on the fly in a non-IE browser is pretty painless and safe.
