Whoa. I go away for a night and half a day, and the thread turns into a series of hissy-fits in my absence?

Children, children... please. Am I going to have to put my social life on hold and supervise you until you learn how to hold a mature discussion without personal attacks? Well, am I?

    *stern mother-voice*

    LOL

Nah. Hissy-fit away, by all means. Technically none of us actually need to find porn in the image search. We just didn't like it when it looked like Google made it mandatory hard to find.

Keep your money, and remove that need by showing him the many other search engines out there. If he's smart to search for it in the first place, then he's smart enough to learn how to find it in Bing or Yahoo, or whichever other he settles on.

You honestly think this matters that much? Wow.

Wow, there are sooooo many things I could say to that and I'm sure many are thinking. But I wont :p

I said I wasn't going to say anymore but Laura has reiterated some of my points and even Mimsy has said that the only real issue here is for some people it's another way to cry out "Oppression" and "Censorship"

@CAT... Why don't you contact google directly and get ALL the FACTS and then see how you feel.

Also once again and both I and Laura have pointed out, if you really want to find it, it isn't difficult and all your wonderful naked searches will still come up if you know what to search for. And once AGAIN you can still freely use the standard search to find all the porn, abuse and bomb making techniques you wish.

Is it REALLY that much of an issue? ... in my mind... it's a tiny tiny tiny issue compared to other things going on online, why don't we boycot facebook for allowing breach of copyright that is costing my wife thousands of dollars in lost sales? or how about still boycotting facebook because they allow online bullying?... see what I mean, this really isn't a big deal.

    Hey, here's an idea , use www.ask.com ;) ... :-D

    rte: Boycott Google!

i feel for all the unwitting children out there like laura's daughter (and my own), who, knowing their search results are set to "unfiltered", take the HEAVILY FILTERED RESULTS as a sign of what their topic really represents.

jaimee foxworth an innocent child star, kitten (and related p word) a harmless animal, bl0wj0b a word rarely depicting anything lewd, nazis and executions and torture etc etc not really involving anything so bad.

yes, i will find another engine, but how do we protect the innocents? google is still the default engine for the bulk of society, including our children. how do we protect THEM from naively trusting it?

Ok last thing, if you are trying to say kids finding porn online is giving them a sense of reality then you are very much mistaken. What you find online of topless women is mostly models who do not represent the majority of women and who teach young males what to expect from women and young females what boys expect of them.
Pron is far from an educational media in any respect... at least for children.

Don't get me wrong, I'm male, I've had my porn days, but I was never under any iluusion that it is reality, most of it is pure fantasy... I'm not sure if the worlds kids should be taught such things at such young ages. Children should keep their innocence as long as possible through childhood.

Again I suggest you take the fight straight to Google. None of us can do anything about it.

That's because that is the only real issue here. If I really wanted to find pron online, there's nothing anyone can do to stop me, and that holds true for any human being with basic internet skills. Including children. ;)

CatT, a suggestion if I may? Your constant personal attacks on Laura's parenting abilities makes you look small-minded and a bit petty. That sort of behavior actually hinders your argument, since the fact you need to resort to personal insults against an innocent third-party strongly implies that you don't have any real arguments, because if you did that's what you would focus on. If you want people who disagree with you to take you seriously you need to try harder to keep it impersonal, or at the very least learn how to look as if you do.

    Just a suggestion. :)

    @Ned,
The single biggest issue with Facebook is that they default your whole account to the lowest possible security level, and then ask their users to enter enough personal information that they can actually easily be put at risk. If I had left the Facebook app on my phone to default, everyone on my friend list would know when my husband and I are away from home and our house is empty, because the app uses my phone's GPS ability to "check in" at restaurants and other public venues whenever I enter them, and posts that on my news feed. That strikes me as very irresponsible, and the potential for abuse of that feature is so great it is not worth having to begin with.

As far as I can tell, the search engine has been changed to search for the word input with OCR, rather than say: boobs.jpg.

i do not mean to make anything personal; i just can't get by the fact that she is saying google needs to "fix" their search engine b/c (apparently) she forgot to avail of the protections it already offered.

or the fact that the "fix" they've offered does not in any way shape or form affect those that DO have "filter" selected. only those of us who A) don't have it selected, B) don't want it selected, and C) weren't complaining about anything needing to be "fixed".

if she would be so kind as to clear that up without chirping "misinformation! misinformation!" i would be most grateful.

in the meantime i'm stocking up on whole milk....

You do realize that a sane person would clarify that first, rather than just jump to whichever conclusion was more likely to give them an excuse to go off the deep end, don't you? :p

If the search filters truly did not work as intended then they did need to be fixed. If I did an image search for kittens at work, and naked women showed up, that could actually get me fired. You might not think that's a problem, but I most certainly do.

yes, so how about they FIX those buggy filters rather than TURNING THEM ON PERMANENTLY?!

how is that is ANY way logical?!

For all we know, fixing is what they tried to do.

Just so we're clear here, I have a problem with Google's behavior with the SafeSearch only if they made the changes they made because they think pron is filthy and should not be viewed. That is censorship, and censorship in a search engine bothers me.

However, if they did this as a result of "let's fix the broken filters", then that is different and would actually be a good thing.

Cat...you can keep obsessing over my example of my daughter if you really want to. I could really care less. It is, however, getting tiresome that you keep bringing it up over and over...even in response to others' comments to you... and it doesn't prove any point other than the fact that you need to continue to personally attack me because you have nothing to say other than they took your button away. As someone already said (Mimsy? or Ned maybe), when you start using personal attacks in your argument you lose any credibility.

Just to be clear, I have never once said anything about it being anyone's responsibility other than parent's to make sure their kids are viewing what they deem okay. If you think that I have said that in any way, you are horribly mistaken (using an example of google's results for 'kitten' in relation to my daughter at age 5 would not mean that I hold that belief...it just happened to be a more memorable one for me of the flaws (and yes, I do believe it a flaw) in google's image search). I'm a firm believer in personal responsibility...that includes not thinking that companies are responsible for keeping my kids on good sites. So, I'm in vehement agreement with you about that.

Google is a company. They do what's in the best interest of Google. They don't care that CatT got her button taken away. They care about their profits.

Again, they didn't take away the pron, they took away your button. You'll either have to get over it or find a new search engine.

Good luck with this horrible time in your life.

I really do hate saying the same stuff over and over and what's worse is reading the same stuff over and over, so I'm done.

i never said anything personal or ad hominem. it could be your daughter, it could be your neighbor, it could be you yourself, the point is you are citing some IRRELEVENT PROBLEM as the reason to take my "button" away. along with snappy remarks about how maybe "i don't care" that she sees pron...which i never said.

ok, THIS will be ad hominem (slighty): you hereby win the STRAW HORSE award of 2013!

there are problems/issues/dangers in my life and in my daughters' lives. if i cited any of them as a reason to COME BREAK THE OFF SWITCH ON YOUR TV, wouldn't you find that flat-out illpgical? or would you stick with your "it's just a switch, boo hoo, get over it" argument?

i am not offended, i am not angry, and i hope you still count me as a friend (sorta). but it annoys me as a LOGICAL-THINKING HUMAN BEING that people can string together such nonsequiturs! and someone in TECH, no less.

    :confused

And you've now avoided my direct question 3 times.

What is it that you or your family can no longer find?

    *Yawn*

Inflammatory thread for a case of pebcak.

Google obviously made a change that broke something. It says that safe search is enabled, and you click ok and it shows what you were looking for in all its natural, or unnatural glory.

Google broke something, deal with it. Don't make an inflammatory thread and then be condescending. This has happened in the past years, and Google fixed it those times too.

I am going to go ahead and close this thread for moderator review. It is a little too hot for comfort in here.
