Sooooo disappointed

I had been at my job for over 4 years. Everything was going great, I worked my butt off doing everything they asked and more. Today, my boss tells me he has to let me go because he's going in another direction (what?) and I asked if I did something wrong and he said no, I've been great. He just is looking for something else (again, what?!).

I'm really, really disappointed because I have worked my butt off, even my co-worker who has been there longer than I have has said that only her and I actually work and know what's going on. Most of my coworkers "work from home" or just sit in their offices texting or web surfing. Some decide make their own schedules and show up whenever they feel like it. It really sucks to lose your job when you one of the few that actually worked. :(

Looking for something else? What exactly is what I'd like to know.

Sorry to hear the bad news, dyamond. :(

Thanks and me too! I wish I would have asked, I guess I was just in shock and didn't think about it. I didn't see this coming at all. :(

What an incredibly lame reason for firing someone! Are you the only one who had to be let go so he could seek this "new direction"? Actually, it doesn't really matter. What a dolt. Here's hoping you find something much better almost immediately!

dy...that completely and utterly sucks! I'm so sorry to hear that. What's really horrible is the boss can't articulate why... "going in a different direction" is a complete cop-out for an excuse. Even if they are, or he is, he should at least have the balls to tell you what that direction is.

    :(

Dyamond - sorry to hear about your job loss.

Based on my own bad experiences and those of friends, if you're fired for no reason it usually means one or more of a few things:

    * The boss is banging someone, and what was your job will be her/his reward for putting out.

    * The company is going through some financial issues and your boss was told to cut corners. They're under the delusion that - if they hire a clueless replacement for you for a few bucks less - they'll save money (versus the loss of productivity by hiring a cheap screwup).

    * The boss has pressure on him to hire a close friend or relative of an executive or owner (the "good ole' boy" syndrome).

In any case, your ex-boss with soon discover with your replacement that Karma is a real b***h. I wish you the best of luck on finding something a lot better than the job you had.

I know we don't know eachother, but WOW! Those are the EXACT words that my boss gave me when he laid me off. I had been at the law firm as a legal assistant for THIRTEEN years. He laid me off because he was "heading in a different direction" and when I asked if he was unhappy with my work, he said he was not. That happened Sept. 21, 2012. I'm still unemployed (but haven't been able to look for a job as it turned up my my got cancer and I've been taking care of her).

I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you find an even better job. Hopefully a job where all the co-workers are fun to be around and work with, and who actually carry their share of work. Good luck! :)

So sorry to hear the bad news,Dy :(. Yeah, it sucks right royal butt, i.m.o. So how come his "new direction" doesn't involve utilizing a valued worker? Unless he's going broke, or some such, like gman said. Had it happen once and the company lasted about three months before it went broke and the Director in court for a bunch of breached contracts, including me that was suing his butt off.:mad (Yep, I made sure he was banned from holding any Company Directorships/Owners/C.E.O.'s for a long, long time).
More to the point, the lack of money will suck big-time for sure. I hope that you find something much better real soon, Dy.:)
Now I remember why I refuse to work for or with anybody else again. Because 99.5% of people are very capricious and selfish S.O.B.'s, i.m.o. They'll be with you while the money's there to sponge what they can and stab you in the back at the first opportunity. A tad negative, yes I know, but unfortunately, true in most cases.

    Good luck, Dy! :)

What a different direction? so its as if you could not change to this direction? I think not as I know you can adapt to any situation, so this is an excuse in my book.

Has he told you what new direction he is looking in? *south maybe!!!!* < sarcastic remark

I just don't get it when you work great and boss says so that your are laid off when they say they are looking in a different direction, its nto as if many folk cannot adapt to new ways of working if that is needed.

This reeks of the same think I see in our gov depts. of nepotism and the boss wants a relative to work their.

Dya, I wish you well in a new job and I know with your skills you will find one soon, pity you are not across the pond as if we did have vacancies at present you would be great as I'd take you on.

Sounds like a wrongful termination. If you are a hard worker and they termination you with out reason then that is wrongful if you ask me i had that happen to me a few times.Going in a Different Direction is not an answer me i like to know way i am being terminated for.If they can not give you straight answer it is total BS.

And i know it sucks.Sorry to hear that it happend to you.

Did you have any kinda contract with them.

I think gman863 is on to something in his post. Bad karma for your boss . . . what a :***

Probably for the best - if they treat their employees in such a fashion they don't deserve to employ you. I wish you much success in securing a new position. I got a feeling you aren't going to be unemployed very long, and your new job will be much better then your old one.

    (P.S. I'm sending your boss many negative mental waves . . . )

Both my sister and my friend said this. I honestly never had thought about it but it's a huge possibility now. The company has been losing some high profile clients but I didn't think they were doing that poorly.

In all honestly, I think it might be this or a combination of this & your above statement. A few months back they hired a close personal friend to help around the office with a few things. A few things turned into a few more things and at the same time I noticed our (mine & my bosses) relationship changed. Where we used to joke around a lot and have friendly banter, kind of ceased to exist. He would talk with her the way he used to talk with me. So maybe he decided he couldn't afford the both of us, so he let me go. I don't know if this is the true but it makes the most sense to me.

That's why I think he gave me that whole "going in another direction" speech (even though we all know that excuse is a bunch of crap) is so that there is nothing I can "get" him with. Not that would have anyway.

You're very right. I've adapted to every change they've thrown my way, why would this different? I said "I wish you would have talked to me, I would have done anything" His reply "I know but the money will be there" (as if saying, you'll get unemployment so you'll be fine.. gee thanks for your concern rolleyes)

Awww thanks... so sweet of you to say this! :)

No, no contract. The state I live in is an at-will employment state meaning they can fire you for any reason at anytime and you can't do anything about it unless it's blatant discrimination. Firing someone so you can hire your friend isn't illegal (as far as I know) just unethical.

Thanks to everyone for all your well wishes (and negative thoughts towards the man LOL), you guys are awesome :). I sent out a text to all my friends asking them if they knew if anyone was hiring to let me know and 3 of them responded and said their jobs might be looking for someone. So I'll be ok, once I get past the disappointment of it all.

Yeah, I got that speech/excuse too. But fortunately, in this country, there are extensive Labour Relation laws, (a P.I.T.A. in some cases, but as an employer and Director, I can attest to this), but it does work occasionally in my favour. ;). I was contracted as a Consulting Chemist and it was a clear breach of contract for everyone who was affected. I dislike conflict, but it was an important enough principle in that case. Basically, he was a 'looser', anyway rolleyes.

Pity you're not anywhere near me, (could you be any further away, LoL!?), or you would be employed in a heartbeat, i.m.o.. ;)

That sucks Dyamond! Take a few weeks off, organize your shoes, then go find a better job with better pay! Good luck and best wishes, but I doubt you will need the luck. :-D

I was recently unemployed for a couple of months with no unemployment insurance. I got a really cool job now, but it don't pay much! But, it pays enough for me to get by while I look for a better job. Got a few things brewing, will see what happens. I always liked Arizona and New Mexico... :cool

I'd tell it like it happened: Quote your ex-boss's remarks and let them know that it is a mystery to you. It wouldn't be *you* making them look bad, their actions speak for themselves.

Wishing you the best, having been where you are before...

After the way you were treated, why would (or should) you care?

Cipher's hit it the way it should be handled; you weren't given much of a legitimate reason for termination and that's what you should let a potential new employer know. And I'll wager pretty much anywhere you go to apply the potential employer's heard the "another direction" excuse before. It's a pathetic, cover-your-a$$ way of letting someone go when they have no reason to do so.

In the end Dya, it sadly looks as if the boss has someone else in mind, maybe a family member or a friends relative to take on, especially when excuses like this happen.

I think you need to not dwell on this, pick your good self up and dust off and get out their with good new look resumes and send them or turn up in person to companies that you think you'd like to work for.

If while out of work you can do any courses to learn new skills free from Gov then do them.

Create a mall portfolio of what work you have done, this could just be proforma documents you have designed, the skills you have say creating Excel Spreadsheets, Access Databases etc, add copies of certificates you have to this portfolio.

Also as recommendation letters from ex employers and professionals you know to this also, having a recommendation letter is these days a plus, I have for example one from Microsoft, which does add something different to other candidates.

My boss who is a consultant surgeon said to me a few years back to do this as they tell junior docs to do the same as its proof of things you have done, it did help me get a promotion last year, then again she did come with me to the interview panel so could intimidate the HR folk. But I have always kept this up now as it good for folk to see evidence.

Keep your head up and if you need to chat or have any advice, you know my email address, drop me a email any time, if I can help I will

Well, I was always told that it reflected bad on you if spoke bad about a previous employer :confused I'm mean I guess I could just tell them all I was told was "they are moving in another direction".. that doesn't sound "bad" and it's the truth.

Some great ideas here, thanks so much for the support! :) I'm trying my best to stay optimistic here. I've applied for a few jobs already but haven't heard anything back. Hopefully soon!! Thanks again everyone and BOOM those links are great! They helped me a lot!

If you have not filed for unemployment, you should go now. You will have a week of waiting and then filing starts the day you file for that week.

With that said, I love my hair but it would be a major faux pas to show up at a serious job interview with pink hair.

So I have the dye ready and I'll just remember all the good times we had together, hair. I'm gonna miss you. :cry

So how you get on at the interview Dya?

The pink hair would not have worried me at all in interviews and in my work you'd think it would, as well as tattoos and piercings but they do not, as what you look like does not always portray what abilities you have.

Maybe I'm more conservative in interviews than many.
