    Hi Guys

My husband is having problems with a certain excel spreadsheet that he uses daily.

It can see/find the excel doc. Click to open, thats OK. Then it asks for password, he types that in then, nothing happens ie the excel headers show but screen stays grey and nothing happens. It worked yesterday morning.

He is runnign Windows Vista Home Premium + Office 2003.

    Other excel documents open.

This maybe a complete coincidence but he took his computer outside, ie unplugged power and went wireless. Since then he has not been able to open this excel spreadsheet and now he has replugged his computer back in and cant get a wireless connection, but this may have nothing to do with anything.

Our main concern is the disappearance of the excel spreadsheet.

We have restarted his computer a number of times.

Here's hoping one of you guys can help us.:)

    Cheers

    Jackie

No advice on passwords in Office. Just reminding you not to back up over your back up copy of this file if you have one and if you back up on schedule, etc...

    Hi there

This is not a password problem, I am 100% the password is correct. It's just the file wont open.

Thanks for the reminder re the back-up.

    Cheers J x

Have you tried the diagnostics and repair features of Office? I have Office 2007, and the diagnostics program is on the start menu in Programs->Microsoft Office->Microsoft Office Tools.

You can run a repair from Add/Remove in Control Panel by clicking on Microsoft Office in the list, selecting "Change" and then the "Repair" option...

Thanks AtlBo, I have now tried both of the above with no joy. Still a mystery.

Did you try moving the file to another machine and try to open it?

Looks like the file is corrupted. You may be out of luck. Do you have a backup?

I don't know if there any any utilities that can repair it.

I know you don't need the password, but there are password crackers for Excel. I haven't ever used one, but I believe that some of them add a feature for force opening a file with a password. I don't know which ones, but there are some free ones available I believe.

Here's a link to some reviews of one of them that has some information in it about others that you might try:

Sorry about the external link to this site. This is to the reviews...they are at the bottom. I guess I thought since this is sort of an emergency.

One amazing site...Microsoft Answers. Try it out for your Excel problem. It's a free board, and the contributors work for free...and boy do they know Microsoft Office...

    Hi guys

I tried to rename the excel worksheet, but it gives me a message that file is already open and cannot be re-named, however I still cant see it even tho' excel is running.

    Thanks guys
