hello this is my first post.
I am helping a friend who has a Dell with windows 7. 3 days ago his computer would not open his windstream email. He can get to the internet its just the windstream email link that will not connect. I tried to get to my yahoo. email on the computer and it went through. Here is want I' ve done so far: Pinging to windstream through domain and IP is good, IPV6 has been disabled in the properties, and several restore points were tried but that did not fix the problem. I also reset the modem but nothing is fixing this. I tried to download AVAST to do a scan BUT could not download the file.
There was a PDF upgrade done automatically and I got a note from AVAST that was interesting in this link ::http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9236751/Zero_day_PDF_exploit_affects_Adobe_Reader_11_and_earlier_versions_researchers_say
    Does anyone have ANY suggestions.??

    Try this http://www.windstream.com/Support/

But what if any error messages do you get when trying to connect to email and I would imagine the email was working before OK?

Is this webmail your friend cannot connect to or are they using software like Windows Live Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird, and if so what one?

I would run CCleaner and run its Cleaner option (do not change any of the options as they are fine in default form) and then reboot and check email.

If you could not download AVAST, why was this as this could be crucial to the issue as it could well be malware? can you run this scan http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/free-tools choose the online scanner

He is not using windows live mail, outlook, or thunderbird. He is trying to go to windstream email login and it will not open. Anything else will open including yahoo email and the windstream main site which contains the email login link. We contacted the windstream support folks and they were less than helpful. They said as long as he can access everything else then he is ok. When we explained that we cannot get to the email link they said its not their problem.
I will try the links suggested and get back to you...thanks

Sorry, I made a mistake in posting it. DavidGP corrected it.

Which link do you mean this time?

Does you friend's browser go to https://secure.windstream.net/login/?[string of code may follow] when the login link is clicked? What happens then? Does the problem occur after the email address and password are entered and the Log In button is clicked? Exactly what happens?

What browser is being used here? Have you tried a different browser?

Why couldn't you download avast? What happened?

Re: the recent security vulnerability with Adobe Reader, you might remove Adobe Reader and install Foxit Reader.

    Thanks for the reply....
Sorry that was a double post....about the link
When we go to windstream.net and click on the login link on that page which is https://secure.windstream.net/login/ the page simply does not load at all and after 2 min. we get the windows white screen saying that there is a connection problem and asks if you want windows to diagnose the problem..which we do and it comes back in 30 sec. saying that it cannot find the problem.
As for avast it attempts to download the EXE file but stops at 5% and then just sits there. we waited 30 min. but it did not download anymore.
We are using ie 8 and have not tried any other browsers.

I want to thank everyone who has tried to help me with this issue...It seems that the problem was with a file server that handles the email for windstream. After several other uses complained to windstream they finally found the problem and all is well now. Thanks again
