4TB External HDD formatted only 2TB allocated

I bought a Hitachi Touro Desk Pro to back up my new build and Windows Backup & Restore came back with an error (0x8078002a). After searching the internet for a solution, the most popular one was to format the drive and try again. I did this and it still didn't work, so I formatted it through Disk Management, and that left me with a 2TB partition and a 1.6TB partition. I can only allocate the 2TB partition, but cannot extend it into the 1.6TB. When they are both unallocated, I cannot allocate the 1.6TB. I've tried DiskPart, but that leaves me with the same results.
I haven't been able to backup my computer yet, and I'm getting really antsy about it because I know of all the things that can go wrong. Any ideas please?

    Hi

What you likely need is the drive to be formatted not as an MBR but as a GPT drive, and to do this open up Disk Management in Windows 7 and delete the two partitions on that external drive, then right click on the drive in the bottom of the middle windows and choose Convert to GPT disk

Then once converted you can format it, and it should show all 4TB less the formatting overheads.

    Some good info HERE

Yep, been through this. You have to use GPT.

I'm still getting the 0x8078002a I/O error when backing up

At this point from some internet research the only fix appears to be to format the hard drive using default options in Windows 7.

Make sure you format the whole drive as one partition and then if you need to split it into other partitions you can delete & reformat it afterwards with your partition structure.

I tried that, and that's what got me into the original mess of having two partitions, one of which I couldn't format. I can't seem to find anything online, and the Hitachi tech support guys aren't being of much help either

This is interesting, as if you delete all partitions from the drive and create one new one, Windows shouldn't create two.

Please download the program below and burn it to a CD. Then boot the system from it, and this will allow you to format the drive outside of Windows to see where the problem lies:

I've gotten it to create just the one partition now (I was creating an MBR instead of GPT), I just can't back things up on to it. I get the error code 0x8078002a

The only utility I can find is for WD hard drives. I'm not sure if this will do anything for your Hitachi external.

There is also an update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018
but this update was from March 2012

I also found this post from Feb. 14th 2013
So it appears Seagate has a solution too.

You might want to call Hitachi to see if they have advice for you.

    Hi

See if you have this in your Windows Updates History list KB982018

If not then try installing the one HERE for your Windows 7 version.

I know this next bit is not a fix but a workaround, but try and see if this free backup app Easeus ToDo works to backup your PC to this external drive, or does it give the same error message as you have been getting.

I have tried that update - it was one of the first things I tried.
But that backup program worked, thanks :)
