Canoscan 8400F WIA driver problem

I am trying to use my Canoscan 8400F with Windows 7 64bit OS on an i7 PC and utilising the standard Canon / Scangear software and drivers.
I can configure all the scanner settings but when I press scan in Scangear I keep getting the message "Can't communicate with the device please check your cables and connections......." Also another message pops up saying "Can't start the twain device"
The cables are all OK as the scanner works fine on another Win XP PC using the same cables and the USB port works with other devices.
I have downloaded all the latest drivers from the Canon website but can't find the specific WIA driver. I have also upgraded all the Canon software and all the latest windows updates are installed. I have tried to upgrade drivers from inside Device Manager but it comes back with "The best drivers are already installed" message.
If I go to Devices & Printers in the start menu and click on the Canoscan 8400F icon it pops up a message "WIA driver needs to be installed to use this device"
Is there some trick to this?
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

 

Thanks plodr for taking the time and posting the link but sadly I already have this download from both the European and USA Canon sites and now the Canadian site. It still doesn't work and is the same problem.
When you right click on the scanner icon and go to properties it identifies the scanner correctly and says the driver is working. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them from within this window but it is always the same result which is it opens a message that says the WIA driver needs to be installed. Maybe there is no WIA driver available.

From what I have read it is because the 8400F is a TWAIN device and 64bit WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) software is not TWAIN compliant.
I hope there is a solution because it is a great scanner that also does 35mm film negatives and colour slides and was very expensive when I bought it.

 

Try Vuescan http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/canon_8400f.html That website says you need to use the 64 bit version of Vuescan, but if that doesn't work try using the 32 bit version. I've found at least one page on that website that has it backwards.

 

Thanks plodr but yes I have already tried that and also getting the TWAIN x64 drivers and loading them too. I also tried the Canon LIDE 100, LIDE 200 and LIDE 500 drivers in case they work but still the same communication problem:cry

I am just about to try cabiinc's suggestion of Vuescan. I haven't seen this before so with a bit of luck it will work.

Otherwise time for a new flatbed scanner:mad

Good call cabiinc worked a treat on the trial version so I will buy the Pro version with unlimited upgrades :-D
Sounds like a good deal @$79.95 and can use on 4 PCs :cool

Glad you got it working. Not only is Vuescan good for 4 computers, it's also the same program with the same interface for thousands of scanners. No more needing to learn a new interface with a different scanner. It's also cross platform for the same license.
