When I download documents they appear in a window called "Downloads". To demonstrate what I mean I attach a screen print of a "Downloads" window.

In the bottom left-hand corner is a button: "Clear List". When one or more documents, etc. are listed in the "Downloads" window the text "Clear List" is 'normal'. When you click on the button it removes the documents in the list.

For the last few days even when there are items in the "Downloads" window "Clear List" is 'greyed out'. Clicking on the button has no effect.

Why could this be happening? How can I correct this problem?

The list you are looking at in Firefox isn't of itself of any importance, as all it is is a list of shortcuts to the actual downloaded files which you will find in Start > Username > Downloads. If any of the actual files in that folder get deleted they will still show in Firefox, though I suspect that a firefox restart , or a system reboot will resolve any discrepancies between FF and your Downloads folder.

Thank you for your reply Earthling. I appreciate the list is of no importance. However, something has gone wrong for this to have changed.

I have reset Firefox and restarted Windows. These two actions haven't fixed the problem.

Hey mark59, have you tried using firefox in safe mode to see if the problem is still there ??

Hello Nick T. I hadn't tried safe mode. I put Firefox into safe mode. I'm afraid the problem is still there in safe mode.

Honestly mark, I would uninstall firefox, then search for the Firefox and Mozilla files and delete them, run Ccleaner, then reinstall firefox and see if it happens again.

Hey mark59 I had the same problem about a year ago, and the only way I got rid of it was I installed the "download status bar" plugin from the add-on page. It gets rid of that download window, and puts it in a bar at the bottom of the browser with a clear button on the right. I have had no problem clearing them since I know it does not fix the problem but to me was a good work around, hope this helps.

Have you tried manually deleting each off the list by selecting an item in the window and pushing the delete key on your keyboard, or right clicking and remove from list. Maybe if you remove all that way, then the button will show up on your next download?

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate your system works; however, I would like, if possible, to get to the root of the problem and fix it.

I have been removing them that way. Unfortunately, the button doesn't show up on the next download.

The problem I described in this thread was on one of my computers. I've logged into my other one and downloaded something. It has the same problem. How bizarre is that! Hopefully, that might be a clue to the right solution. It suggests to me an issue with the Firefox software. But, what that issue is I just don't know.
