Sorry for the delay. I have not had time to be online too much of late due to real work/life issues.

Not true at all. The How to protect yourself from malware sticky was last updated on 03-06-2013. See the bottom of the message which shows

As far as I know it all still applies. The only thing you don't need to do is the update since you do not need one. There are methods available for Win 7 Pro using gpedit.msc but this is only available in the pro version which most people do not have.

There are also some new tools available to help with autorun infections. Like using a program like >> Autorun Eater

The Active X settings still apply and are still seen with titles just like those mentioned although they are not all under the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section. But you will find them further down. With newer versions of Internet Explorer, from about IE8 and above, the default settings are all set properly and if you just make sure that the defaults are set by rechoosing it, you should be getting all of the recommended settings.
