I am thinking about buying a new computer and was wondering what type of drive to buy to back up blu-ray discs. all the desktops I look at say multi-drive, but I don't know if they will back up blu-ray. my current computer will back up regular dvd's, but not blu-ray. let me know if you know. thanks

You mean like a DVD drive, or hard drive/SSD? You do not use a drive to back up a Blu-Ray, you use software to "Rip" the Blu-ray disc to the Hard drive or SSD that you have installed in the computer.

As for changing your existing DVD burner, you would purchase a Blu-Ray burner, which you can get through amazon.com, newegg, local mom & pop computer shop, bestbuy.com, etc..

I guess my question should have been which type of drive will I need to read the blu-ray disc and save it to my hard drive. I have dvd-fab to rip it but my computer won't recognize the disc.

Windows 7 doesn't do Blu-Ray. There have been several threads about this problem.

google Blu-ray and you will find lots of threads posted about not being able to read the disks with Win 7.

PotPlayer and VLC are supposed to work but some can't even get those to read the Blu-ray disks.
PowerDVD, a paid program, supposedly works. I haven't read feedback on yes it does or no it doesn't.

A Blu-ray drive. and the proper software that can read blu-rays.

First off, you do not have to google anything. Nero and Ashampoo do Blu-ray burning. As for ripping, the software is actually available over on the file repository here at Majorgeeks.com.

You do not need to purchase Win8 to use a Blu-Ray drive. Again, the drive will either come with the software, or you will have to download the software, but the blu-ray will work fine with Vista.

The only problem with running Win8 on older hardware, is that it is very resource heavy with older chipsets, and drivers may not always be available if the hardware is obsolete. I was lucky with my Acer a0532h netbook, that drivers are still available for the hardware inside. If I need a blu-ray drive, I can always get a USB 3.x capable to connect to it.

Keep in mind, they are pricier than standard DVD burners. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemp...SP&sp=-bestsellingsort+skuid&usc=abcat0500000

brownizs, Mimsy's new computer could not read Blu-ray (the link I posted). You can't rip something if the computer will not even play the disk you want to copy.

That is as I stated before, you have to have the software loaded to play blu-rays, not just install the hardware.
