How do you figure this out?

This is pretty much verbatim what my mother just told me. ‎"Some kind of software wanted to update, so I did it, but I didn't do the one, I just did the other thing. But then Microsoft gave me a message that it had a problem with it, except I don't remember what it said and it wouldn't let me save it. But it all works now so it should be fine. You might want to look at Microsoft, though, because it said something might not work."

*I'm not actually asking for tech advice, by the way. I'm just... :banghead

Is this what people really do when they call tech support? How do you not reach through the phone and throttle them?

I've played with it on and off all day, and as near as I can tell, everything works. What sucks is that everything is up to date, so I have no way of knowing what it was she updated (or what she chose not to). Someday I swear I'm going to walk in and her computer will have thrown itself out the window and run away. LOL

"Ignore and move on." is how i operate with such, if its really an issue it will present itself again im sure.

Yes, it is. And you don't because it's not physically possible to reach through a phone connection. Also, most tech support employers frown on their employees threatening and/or insulting customers.

And for the record, you handle that by back-tracking... "Okay, I can definitely help you with that. Before we begin, can I ask you a couple of questions, just to make sure we've covered all the details? Great. So what is the name of the program you wanted to update? Thank you. And can you walk me through, step by step, exactly what you did at that point?"

If they say no to that second question, you take over, walk them through the update, and refer them elsewhere for help with any self-inflicted issues that were caused by them clicking on the wrong things to begin with. ;)

Y'all are way better people than I am. I think I would probably be fired before lunch if I had to work tech support. Or I would be a multi-billionaire because I designed a way you could physically reach through phone lines to throttle people. ;)

However...Today it happened while I was in the house, so I could go look. Turns out she didn't update anything. It was the Avast status report that popped up, and she told it "ok", which prompted a scan. I have no earthly idea where she got Microsoft out of that, but whatever. I'm actually fairly happy she's running scans, even if it's by accident. LOL

Might have been a software update. Avast did prompt me to update Adobe Reader yesterday.

Excellent, thank you! I didn't think it was, since nothing like that has come up on my machine and I also use Avast. But you've just made it a good day, since I learned something. :-D

    Verbatim :)

Beth, yes that's the response you get a lot of the time for PC issues, not the users fault as that are just stating what they see. Not great for a tech but hayho!

I get this with my mom, "david the menu thing at the top of the thing is missing how do I get this back".... me what menu thing and thing is it?

My crystal ball is not as good as it used to be! :major

I do as a serious point here install Secunia PSI on PCs to folk I know will not update or are weary of updates, saves a lot of hassle.

Version 8 of Avast now includes some extra "components" which aren't needed and which will lead to more problems, IMHO.

The only way you get the choice to Not install these is to select Custom Install.
There are three configuration choices. Typical is the default and installs Software Updater as well as
Browser Protection, Avast Remote Assistance and Browser Cleanup. Minimal only installs Browser Protection and
of course Custom lets you choose.

First time I installed, I didn't know what that was, so had to do it again and omit that stuff.
Most people will likely do the Express install and get all of the new headaches.

Don't forget the MajorGeeks Updater. Patch My PC is quick but don't think it covers all of the security stuff.

Last night she tells me Avast wants to install Adobe Air, and her only options are "yes" or "remind me later". I can think of no reason on earth why Avast would want to install Adobe Air, so I tell her if it comes up again when I'm not here, to just say "remind me later" until it pops up while I'm in the house.

It did that a few minutes ago. Turns out she downloaded Adobe Air (anything that says Adobe she automatically does when it comes up, because she uses a lot of .pdf files and thinks she won't be able to read them), and now Avast is asking, as it does, if she really wants to install it. She has no need for it whatsoever, but it was easier to let it install than to argue with her about it. Her machine is going to have the speed of two tin cans and a string at some point.

    My brain hurts. LOL
