Schrodinger’s USB ports.

This is perhaps one of the weirdest problems I have not been able to solve, I call it schrodinger’s USB ports.

My operating system (Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 64bit) is unable to recognize any brand of USB storage device, containing any file system, plugged into any USB port on any hub. In fact any USB storage device does not appear under Device Manager nor is a problem shown with any device listed under ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’. USB keyboards and printers work just fine and can even handle large transfers of data (ie scanning an image at 2400DPI). In addition, I can boot Windows 8 to go via external USB drive with no problems.

I had downloaded and ran usbdeview-x64, a few odd things occurred after ‘Steps I had previously taken”:
    • Duplicate instances of USB storage devices are listed, except for TomTom GPS devices.
    • Only through running usbdeview-x64 as admin and then ‘Disable+Enable’ a device allows it to be shown in the Device Manager and Explorer.exe. This lasts until a restart.

    What is going on here?

    System info:
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Motherboard nForce 650i, model 0PP150 made by Dell Inc
    Dell BIOS 1.0.13
    4GB RAM DDR2 Dual Channel
    NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT
    Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 64bit

I occasionally receive the following errors:
    • Device driver software was not successfully installed USB Mass Storage Device
    • Event 12, HAL: The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition. Please check for updated firmware for your system.
    • Event 10010: The server {1A1F4206-0688-4E7F-BE03-D82EC69DF9A5} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. 1A1F4206-0688-4E7F-BE03-D82EC69DF9A5 refers to the Sync Center Control.

    Steps I had previously taken:
    • Reflashed my Dell BIOS 1.0.13 via XPS630i-010013a.EXE, SHA-1: DDFAA7FFE5C2776977BE6B4B8DE28290B30D903F
    • Reinstalled the drivers for my mother board (NVIDIA nForce 650i) via 15.57-nforce-winvista-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe, SHA-1: F0FB0637022E52703A32FEC94918D3DD865CE459
    • A clean reinstall of GPU drives and software via 314.07-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql.exe, SHA-1: 1CD7658568AA973CE457CB1993C18D569269DD59
    • Scanned my entire hard drive from a remote operating system (Windows 8 to go) with Nod32 at maximum heuristics.
    • Shut down firewall Zonealarm Pro V11, disabled all aspects of Nod32 v6 then tried unplugging and replugging USB storage devices.

    Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks!

A few starting questions for you:

    1. How long ago did this start?
    2. What changed around the time this started? Windows update, plugging in a new device, problem with a corrupt memory stick etc etc)
    3. What is the make and model of the system as a whole?

Unfortunately my gut reaction would be a problem with the motherboard, but at this stage we will try other alternatives first.

Are you plugging all the USB devices in through a hub? Is the hub powered?
Two thoughts: if it isn't powered, there might not be enough power supplied and the hub may have died.

Connect directly to a USB port on the computer and post back what happens.

I have been coordinating with social.technet.microsoft.com for help as well.

I have internal USB hubs connected to my motherboard, the ones that have been used are: Hub_#0001, Hub_#0002, Hub_#0004. They are powered and I can tether boot Windows 8 to go from a non powered external HD via the ports on those hubs. The tether booted OS (Windows 8 to go) can access USB Storage devices without problems. This leaves me to believe there is a software problem rather than a hardware problem.

Approx. one week as of now.

BIOS upgrade to 1.0.13 in response to NVSTOR64 RAID related errors. Solved by disabling RAID in the BIOS, was on by default in version 1.0.8.

My system specs as gathered by Speccy v1.20.446 are attached.

This was my first inclination too until I could access USB storage devices when tether booted from an external operating system (Windows 8 to go). The same hardware is being used by different software.

I am sorry for making so many posts, can’t edit after 10mins, new developments. I have finally found unique error messages in my system log! An .xml of the selected system events has been uploaded.

    Basic text:
