Does WMP Not Rip CD's in Windows 8?

Never used Windows 7 for Disks because that machine of mine did not have an Optical (CD/DVD) Drive, however, 8 is different than Vista (the OS I last used to work with disks), in that there is no (clear/obvious) tab to select for Ripping (screenshot), nor have I been able to find one in poking-around (exploring) Windows Media Player on this new machine.

I haven't been able to learn how to rip music from my Amazon Cloud Player account to WMP in several days of trying, searching on the web, and asking here and on another tech site, and now I can't get WMP to work either.

Either I'm becoming more stupid (which is possible..I suppose), or Microsoft is simply changing too much too fast, as I continue to struggle GREATLY with this new OS (8), despite finding a a start menu panel "thing" (software program??) that works "fairly well" for me..

Organise > Options > Rip Music tab. If WMP isn't working you could try Foobar 2000

Thank you. Exploring "Organize" again (further/deeper this time), then, more specifically, diving into "Options", worked for me.

Am rather terrified ("traumatized"?) to try any "3rd-party" programs these days...struggling badly enough as it is with changes from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (if only perceptual "changes", for the most part, at this point).

Of course I'm told that I am "wrong" about this (wrong to be struggling with this new OS)..and/or that I'm wrong for mentioning it here...and/or that I'm simply wrong....and/or wrongly simple.....and/or am a monkey's uncle......and/or . . . . .

    Thanks again - much, :wave

You say you're using Windows 8 but your screenshot appears to be from Windows 7. In the lower left corner, it shows All Programs. That's not in Windows 8; it is in Windows 7. Your screenshot also shows the Windows 7 Start button.

    He's using Start 8, a start menu for 8.

Apparently grc123 is using a software such as Start8 to make Win 8 look like Win 7 ?

yes, oma, i have found the one from iobit to be working best for me, and thanks earthling.

but of course now there is another problem with WMP that makes me feel like taking a hammer to this new machine..maybe it's a common problem, i don't know as i've never done much of this ripping/burning stuff, but here's the problem:

it "says" it "ripped" this CD to the machine, but it won't allow me to burn the first track/song.

as the screenshot shows, the duration of track #1 is blank/missing, and the space used is extremely minimal compared to the other songs/tracks - clearly it did not rip - but how to remedy this issue is what i'm hoping to be able to do...?

It could be that it had a hard time reading the cd and skipped.

Delete that track and try again.

Ok, thank you, that worked....and leads me into other issues in WMP (issues which I did repeatedly attempt to remedy, and then did a quick search on, but there seems no way to "ask" a question from an article, without receiving an answer/ask a follow-up (I'm sure someone will let me know if I should start a new thread for this).

    1. If my first attempt at burning this music to a disk resulted in a "minus one" (the first song/track that Adrynalyne assisted me with here in the most previous reply), it means that disk (which is an "R" disk) is "wasted" as far as being able to add that final song (or any other data) to, correct?

    2. When I put a home-made CD into the machine to play it (to check to see/hear what's actually on it as in the case above), "how" do I play it..or "find" it (get the machine to "recognize" it)? Seems I used to go into "My Computer">and simply play it from the location (used to be "D" drive on other machines but is "G" on this machine for some reason...

Thanks as always and in advance..

    For # 1:

It is only wasted if you finalized the CD-R. The easiest way to see if it was finalized is to try and add that first song to the already burned CD.

    For #2:

It should play like a normal CD, but might require it to be finalized.

Thanks, but I can't seem to find-out what "finalize", in this instance, means.

Also, the previous screenshot was to show how the right-edge of the Options box ("window"?) is cut-off, and won't allow me to click the edge, drag, and expand it like so many other boxes/windows do. Was hoping if I could expand it I might find something marked/labeled "finalize".. *EDIT* no..that is incorrect...I have so many problems with this new machine and so many screenshots I'm getting them all mixed-up.

Someone MUCH more knowledgeable about all this suggested I take a day (or more) "OFF"...away from the machines..and though part of me would like to walk-away forever, I'm afraid (i am certain) I would lose what little I do know..

Finalize means that the writing session is closed, and nothing further can be added to the CD.

I didn't notice your screenshot last time, but it would appear that it has been finalized.

Thanks, I'm sure it has been finalized (whatever a 'closed writing session' consists of, but I should research that one on my own).

Also this screenshot (in this reply) is what I meant about the "right-edge" being lopped-off (and unable to expand/MAXIMIZE it)...and that is in addition to some other WMP controls being inexplicably "shaded" (inaccessible/un-accessible), but I will also search the web for that info as it doesn't pertain to the original intent of the thread.

    Thanks again.

The cut off makes me think that you are using a non-optimal resolution, or font size.

Yes, thanks again...I suppose it is because I always have to increase the "DPI", so I can actually read from my screens without squinting all the time (bare minimum increase..."114%" in this case - screenshot ).

    Yes, most likely.

What might work better for you is to the use default dpi and simply lower your resolution a notch. Everything gets bigger and you don't have to fight with the custom DPI side effects.

Okay...I don't know if I'm being redundant..(I feel as if I'm on a very slow, rather sickening, merry-go-round!!), and I would LOVE to simply let it all go, but I am totally struggling with some very basic things here, I think...?

I took this disc to my car, and it won't play..the readout says: "Bad Disc" (or "DisK"). The 2nd attempt I made to rip/burn this (on a "CD-RW" this time) does work in the car...though I still can't seem to get either of them to play in the machine on which the were burned (in WMP).

Also (and maybe this is related?), when I attempt to move-on, with ripping/burning the next one I would like to rip/burn, I am now (repeatedly, 4-times) getting this (screenshot)..."WMP has stopped working"....!

Well, thanks but this is a "please disregard" now..

After 3 more unsuccessful attempts, I (for whatever reason?) tried ripping while listening to music from another item already in the library, and the rip finally worked.

Seemingly no rhyme or reason (not that I know of), it just "worked" on this, 7th attempt...?
