Computers are successfully networked. Printer is shared on XP desktop and printer is "installed" on Win 7 laptop. Printing of test page and nothing happens. No reaction on printer at all. Printer icon shows up on laptop and printer is "enabled" What to do?

That would be because Windows XP will not run the Windows 7 driver on it. First off, what printer manufacturer and model number are we talking about. Also if the printer is capable of plugging into ethernet, or use wifi for network printing, that would be better than sharing off of another computer.

Also, you need to make sure that the printer is shared under its properties.

    Thank you.
It's a HP Deskjet 932c. The printer is shared on the host (XP) machine. It has no ethernet connection. It has no wifi capability.

For the price of adding one of these http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=TE100-MFP1 you can get this http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/ho...t/CZ044A?HP-Deskjet-3510-e-All-in-One-Printer

We have a Officejet 4500-G510n-z All in one, that works very well in both Linux & Windows, for Wireless Network printing & scanning. I decided to go the wireless route, after dealing with the headaches of a shared printer off of a desktop, and that we were getting rid of our desktop within the year.

We run the printer through a Netgear WN802T-200 Access Point, which is a hybrid Wireless-G/N A/P with no problems. Really the only two devices that use that A/P, is my son's PS3 and the printer. Everything else in the house runs through a Trendnet TEW690ap.

It sounds like it can't be done without buying a print server. Can you explain what a print server is, and why the print server would enable allow the desired result?

Frankly, the remote print capability from the laptop is NOT NECESSARY. I only want to have the capability if it can be done with what I have, otherwise a short walk in my house is not a problem.

My system, as is, is fine for me. I am now in the process of "networking" the two, and am trying to LEARN. It would be very much appreciated if you can answer my question as I'm anxious to LEARN.

I don't understand why the host (XP) computer needs to have the Win 7 printer driver?

Why would this be different from what I have now? I don't think that this is possible because the printer is old and has no wireless capability. Thanks anyway, and any more explanation and education is appreciated, as I'm trying to understand networking better, and what needs to happen on both machines in order for a printer to be "shared".

go to the hp site and download the windows 7 driver for your Deskjet 932c and install it on your Windows 7 system.

On the windows 7 system go to START > RUN and enter \\<windows xp system name>. You should see the shared XP printer. Do a right click on the printer and select CONNECT.

    That should do it.

That is a long way to do it. Easier to just bring up Network to show computers & printers on your network, right click on the printer that is shared to others, and then go from there. But first remember to load the driver for Windows 7 on the XP machine. It is easier to share backwards from 7 & 8, than it is forward from XP, with older non-network capable printers.

That is almost EXACTLY what I said!!!!

Actually what you stated is the hard way of doing it. Click on Start Icon in taskbar, then click on Network in menu. can be brought up with the properties for the taskbar. If not showing, or on desktop, by bringing up with desktop properties, by right clicking on the desktop, choose "Personalization, then choose "Desktop icons", then choose the icons you wish to show up on the desktop.

The way you stated is a very old way of doing it, which has not been done since the days of Win98. With Windows XP/Vista/7/8, it is actually a whole lot easier these days.

:) :) There is NOTHING hard about it. Just a matter of choice.

True, so true. I prefer the other, since it is easier to explain to novices, than taking them through the command window way.
