ReBar I can't follow the rules

hi, this page won't display the lyrics in IE or opera. it says in japanese "if lyrics not present, pls upgrade browser". i have the latest on each -- with japanese -- but it just isn't there.

    http://music.goo.ne.jp/lyric/LYRUTND37898/index.html

not a japanese problem AFAIK since the OTHER lines about "if it doesn't display" show just fine. but whatever is supposed to LOAD in the middle there (flash?) just doesn't show.

in firefox they don't show either, but after a couple refreshes and/or a surf to a subpage follow by the BACK arrow...suddenly they're there!

what the heck is going on here? can anyone understand the underlying HTML?

    thanks.

PS: even if you don't understand japanese, it should be obvious by the SHAPE of the paragraphs which ones have lyrics in the middle and which ones don't!

Firefox 20.0.1 on Winows 7; I have no problems seeing the lyrics (in Japanese). See screenshot below. Can you post a screenshot of what you see?

The lyrics appear to be generated by JavaScript, but I didn't look too closely at the source page.

not sure how to do a screen capture, but basically, every line in your PNG is absent. the lines SURROUNDING those lyrics are present.

press the "print screen" key on your keyboard and that will put the image on your clipboard. Then paste the image into MajorGeeks

sorry, I haven't used prt scrn in ages. how do I "paste" it to a file in the first place?

from your description I can cut out the middleman and "attach" direct from clipboard, but how would I do that? it gives me a choice of URLs or FILES.

in any case, there will be no surprises. it's exactly as i'm describing -- surrounding text with the "meat" left out.

right now I have 2 tabs open -- one w full lyrics and one without. the one "with" was obtained by surfing AWAY from the page and then hitting "back". it is now doing this CONSISTENLY!

this is worse than being "flakey". how can you account for a page that won't display until SECOND visit....??

    :confused

What is your operating system, browser & version?

It is possible that the JS doesn't work well in your environment.

I see the lyrics in both IE10 and Opera 12.15 on my Windows 8 laptop.

But, I noticed some similarities and differences between other aspects of the page with the two browsers. With both browsers, I cannot highlight the lyrics. This may be due to the way the page is developed; I don't want to try to examine the source code for the page to try to figure out how its designed. Going farther down the page, below the horizontal line separating the lyrics from the content below them, I can highlight lines there but I cannot do so in IE10.

If you have no issues viewing other websites, I'd say the answer to your question might require digging into the source coding for the page. Keep in mind you're viewing a foreign - I'm assuming you're not in Japan - website, most likely developed in Japan and hosted on a server in Japan and these facts may be significant in this situation.

yeah, i can't highlight them either. at first I thought maybe it was a JPG or something.

i looked at the source code but that's beyond me.

no, i'm not in japan. i can read the lingo, but my PC/location/windows etc are all US.

if it didn't show at ALL, i'd figure those might be issues, but as i said, it shows in FF if you come *BACK* to the page. not first time around.

and not first OR second visits in IE or opera.

Just tried it on IE10 (Win7), and the lyrics do not show up at all.

As we all know JavaScript works very different on IE than on other browsers; there may be bugs in the script that breaks it on IE.

P.S. I just ran it on IE10 with the JavaScript debugger; it detected several errors, which will usually stop the script.

OK. i've got a lot of IE probs lately (can't get into email there!) which are prolly along the same lines.

anyway, i no longer need the lyrics (having seen in FF), but any theories as to why it needs a refresh or "revisit" to trigger it in FF?

first impressions were that it was "flaky" in FF, but that's not the case. it CONSISTENTLY displays upon page refresh yet never does -- CONSISTENTLY -- the first time there!

Do you clear the browser cache in between two attempts? It could be that the cached version does not run the JavaScript on first entry? Just theories...

I clear the browser cache/run CCleaner/anti-whatever quite often. but I agree that I think it's a java script prob.

Alas, but having read EVERYTHING on java and java script, I am *still* not quote sure of the difference. How do I tell if my JS is up to date, and how do I fix it if it isn't?

    Thanks

JavaScript is part of your browser; it is only updated when a browser update provides an new JS engine.

The JS interpreters for IE and other browsers are a bit different, so scripts on public websites must be coded carefully so that they work on all browsers in all environments.

Needless to say that coding mistakes can break things on all browsers. The website in question seems to contain a few of those...

i just find it incredibly ODD that FF cannot display the lyrics (either) on first pass, but consistently does so upon hitting "refresh".

    what's up with that?!

    Hi

Not found issues with multiple browsers with your link, so likely possible cause is your internet speed or provider, does it work great with other websites quickly.

Other suspect cause could be the need to update Adobe Flash and Sun Java Runtime, as some sites use these media options to display pages, so if you have an out of date one then it may display slower.... just a thought,
