I need help and I don't even know what the problem is, so I'm sorry for this long post. I hope this is the right place to post it. so anyways i purchased this laptop from ebay without a hard drive or ac adapter. I have my own ac adapter and used it to start up the computer, and I wanted to boot from a live linux cd but when I got to the boot menu it was blank and had no options. I went into Bios and changed the boot order, but the laptop would not boot the live disk, I even tried an external dvd rom , and still it would not boot into it. I kept restarting and trying to figure out how to get something in the boot options and I got nowhere. I took out the battery, and even unplugged the cmos but still nothing.
Eventually the laptop got hot, and while I was in the Bios setup it started making these loud beeps and it froze. I took out the battery and pulled out the ac adapter and so afterward the laptop would not start up, the lights would turn on and sometimes I would hear the fan but nothing, so I left the laptop alone for a while. Now sometimes it will turn on and let me get into the Bios setup, and sometimes just the led lights come on and it turns off immediately. I need help troubleshooting, I have no idea what to do next. Did I fry the motherboard? Is it a power problem? Could it be that the seller did a bad Bios flash?

Unfortunately, it sounds like the motherboard is bad. It's possible the internal fan failed, the unit overheated and - only after the damage was done - the previous owner replaced the fan.

If you just bought the laptop and the ebay seller has a return policy, I would contact them to make arrangements to get your money back. If the laptop was sold as "used" (not "for parts or not working") and the seller refuses to work with you, leaving negative feedback and/or filing an ebay buyer protection claim may be worth a shot to get at least a partial refund.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hope this advice helps.

Thanks for the reply, is there anyway to test to make sure the problem is the motherboard? I bought it used, and the seller wrote that it booted to bios and no further tests were done. Since it did boot to bios a few times, I don't think I could return it.

im no pc expert but i get fine ether way but i agree with gman863 it does sound like your laptop's motherboard is history and i just dealt with a boot issue with xp on my hp pavillion dv6446us laptop (i fixed it with a trial version of system mechanic pro) so i wish good luck with your laptop :).

i justed checked google on your make and model of laptop it seems it's gpu is defective and it costs more to replace the motherboard so you might be better off buying a new laptop since most of my findings were about 4 years old but here is a link from other people who had the same issue http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-85339-hp-dv2700-blank-screen
