Blue screen after turning off computer during windows updates

Hi everybody,

My name is tony and i found this forum when researching this problem... Hoping you guys can help me solve it.

I have a desktop computer operating on Windows XP. I clicked the start menu and then i clicked turn off computer. It went through the usual motions of shut down. Then it showed the blue windows background and it said it was installing a lot of windows updates. It was taking a really long time so i just hit the automatic shut off switch on the back of the tower. Then i turned the switch back on and turned the computer back on. Then i see a blue screen on startup that says the following:

Problem detected unmountable_boot_volume tech info: stop: oxoooooed

And i cant even get into safe mode... what happened? how can i fix? I really hope i dont lose any documents such as important videos i have in my realplayer video library

Help will be greatly appreciated.

That is never a good sign. There is a very good chance that the hard shutdown damaged the hard drive. Especially if it is an older drive, as HDDs become more vulnerable to damage with age.

Your best chance to recover anything from it is to "slave" it into another PC, or use an Apricorn DriveWire tool to connect it via USB to another PC, or possibly an external enclosure. The last option is dependent on whether the drive is EIDE, or SATA regarding which type of enclosure would be needed. You don't want to stress it anymore as a boot drive, that's for sure.
