    My computer keeps freezing.

When it freezes (running Windows 7), it just completely hangs; there's no blue screen or anything, just whatever I'm working on is stuck open and I can't wiggle my mouse, type, etc. My only option is to manually turn off the power and restart.

I found that I can come online occasionally in smart mode. I found the forums here and read the stickies and was able to download the appropriate software.

I should note that when my computer crashed the first time, I was watching basketball playoffs online at an unofficial site. I didn't make the connection until I borrowed a friends computer and was at the same site (I don't know if mentioning it by name is against forum policy) when suddenly his computer got infected by one of those viruses claiming to be an antivirus software resulted in shutting down his computer. Not sure if that's relevant, but I'm not a big fan of coincidences.

So here's the details: I'm running 64 bit Windows 7 on an Acer laptop. I followed all the directions to the best of my ability, but if I missed a step or did something wrong, I'll fix it right away. I'm in finals week of my online college, and if I don't get this fixed I can't complete my assignments and I will NOT graduate, so any help is greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

We really need logs from normal boot mode to properly help you however let's start with what you posted. Not too much in the way of malware being seen. You do have a major issue with installing multiple protection programs and this is a easy way to bring your PC to its knees.

Uninstall ALL of the below now so we can recover from the damage caused:
    • Ad-Aware Antivirus
    • Ad-Aware Security Add-on
    • avast! Free Antivirus
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 22
    • McAfee Security Scan Plus
Then immediately reboot your PC and see if you can run the below in Normal Boot mode.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
If you can run in normal boot mode, tell me how things are working.

man, glad you showed up. I've been refreshing this screen about every five seconds for the past hour!

As for all the protection programs; you're right! to the best of my knowledge i only used to have Ad Aware and one other, but I downloaded several programs trying to fix this booger.

I will uninstall right now. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to boot in Normal Mode (actually, I can usually boot but it freezes within a few minutes).

    thanks!

    You're welcome.
Freezes are rarely due to malware. Just get all those items uninstall and let's see what happens.

    Slight problem with the uninstall:

1.) Uninstalled Ad Aware, no problem. Now it's gone. I'm assuming that the Ad Aware Security ad-ons are gone, or is there something else I need to do to uninstall those?

2.) I clicked on the "uninstall Mcafee Plus" option, and nothing happened...or at least nothing appeared to happen. But now Mcafee plus is gone from the programs list. Could be that it worked, but in a couple of years using windows, Ive never seen a program uninstall by just disappearing...

3.) Have no idea how to uninstall Avast. There is no dummy option for doing so. How do I do that?

4.) SAme question for "Java 6 Update 22". I can't even find it on my computer using the Start search.

Are you uninstalling in normal boot mode? If not, try that. If that does not work then try using the below to uninstall them.

    Revo Uninstaller 1.94
