Typically, when you create an account with someone, part of the process is that you agree to accept offers from their affiliates. You usually have to go back into your account to change your email preferences, or opt out in some other way.

This is why I stick to known and trusted download sources such as Amazon.com. It isn't worth the risk and hassle of potential viruses, malware and adware issues going with sites or software to save a few cents on buying music.

If you ever get an email about canned jellied ham just ignore it. It's spam.

Sadly some websites and companies will sell on your registration info as its cash for them, spam for you sadly....

I tend to keep a spam/unknown email address that I sign up to unknown sites with that I do not 100% trust with my actual info, and this has served me well for years.

    David: Excellent idea!

I actually keep three e-mail addresses: One that's top secret (friends and family only), one for shopping (ebay, Amazon, etc.) and a third (gmail or Yahoo) for totally unknown new businesses or selling/posting on Craigslist. If the third account starts picking up spam, I just delete it and open up a new one.

This is a great idea and something I've been doing for years except, I never use my actual info with anything that's not 100000% needed (like my banking, tax returns, etc). I either use a shrtened form of my name or I have a fake name I tend to use. :-D

I never use the same screen name on websites/forums either.

I think that is the right way to progress at times, while I did change my user name on this forum from Halo (before the game was out BTW user name) to DavidGP which is actually my name and initials, was a big step but I feel it was a need one.

I do keep as Dya does a few email addresses to use for suspect sites and I keep one for business and internet transactions.

I thin we need to keep a track of our own dealings and if you buy and sell on the net then you need to be protective of your accounts, its in your court and not others.
