I'm surprised this has become a problem already, it will be interesting to see what other blueprints become available.

The only possible way to stop this would be a complete information block but I hope it won't be used as reason towards that.

Since the genie is already out of the bottle, I doubt an information block would work even if it were possible. Information on how to do anything from making meth to building a nuclear dirty bomb is already freely available on the Internet. Even if governments tried to block it, there's always the "dark side" of the Internet used by (among others) pedophiles and credit card hackers.

While I agree a 3-D printed gun could kill, it would be the weapons equivalent of bringing a dollar store pocket calculator to a supercomputer building contest. Gangs and hardened criminals can get their hands on a real gun in less time than it would take to build a 3-D one, and Al Queda proved on 9/11 that acts of mass destruction can be accomplished without one.

It costs a ridiculous amount of money to buy a 3D printer, not to mention the polymer/plastic (whatever), When you can get a real gun on the black market for £50, which holds multiple rounds and won't fracture in your face, why would you bother with the printed option?

You can't smuggle it onto a plane as it needs ammunition which will be detected, and without ammo it is a lump of plastic with a nail in it.

Essentially this is a storm in a teacup which will have no actual effect on anything.

What if you had ammunition sewn into you stomach, got a doctors note for a shrapnel war injury and cut the ammunition out when on board a flight?

What if the gun tube was smuggled rectally after a curry and used to fire poo at people on the flight?

    There's danger everywhere...

True. But it would be difficult. And it would be easier to sew a bomb into your body. Plus the new forced air machines should be able to smell the cordite.

What if the forced air detectors were disabled by an air hostess with a drug problem who you blackmailed and explosives weren't available?

Do you agree that the plastic gun would then be worth a shot?

    :-D

3d printers aren't all that expensive anymore.

Yes, yes I do. I'll admit that 90% of the security process in an airport is a sham anyway.

OK, that's interesting. But $1299 for a printer and $400-2000 for polymer/plastic (or whatever it works out to) is one heck of an expensive gun. For that amount, you could hide a gun in your shoe, which airport metal detectors can't "see" down to.

It is expensive for a gun, but chances are 99% that nobody is buying one for solely guns. It just so happens that now, just like meth, you can do it yourself with over the shelf materials.

I have to agree . . . people have been able to make zip guns with just a modicum of metal working and general handyman skill for decades, and they haven't caused teotwawki. I don't see this as anything but a flash in the pan.
