Lots of popups when using Chrome/Firefox

    Hi,

I'm trying to sort out my Dad's computer, which has got something unpleasant on it in the form of a browser add-on for Chrome and Firefox. I've tried uninstalling/disabling it from within the browsers, but it reappears.

What it does is create loads of ad popups when you access websites. IE is unaffected, though.

I've gone through the scan procedure, and a couple of things came up, but not a huge amount. I get the impression this is going to be fairly easy to remove, but didn't want to attempt it without advice!

My Dad uses Ad-Aware antivirus, which isn't detecting anything.

The logs are attached, please let me know what to do next... thank you!

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {6c97a91e-4524-4019-86af-2aa2d567bf5c} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: TopArcadeHits Games - {A7A9D7E7-E0C0-4202-9F13-6A06BD073CDA} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run it by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7, or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\TopArcadeHits.job
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\TopArcadeHits
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\Symantec
    C:\Program Files\AVAST Software
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\temp\*.*

    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{A7A9D7E7-E0C0-4202-9F13-6A06BD073CDA}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\1utccag.exe]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Boxoft Tools]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Browser Infrastructure Helper]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\ccApp]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Google Update]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\MSMSGS]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\QuickTime Task]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]

    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now you need to run MSconfig and put this PC into Normal Startup mode. MSconfig should not be used as a permanent startup manager like this. You now have many registry entries stuck in there for applications that have been uninstall ( like Symantec to mention only one ). Read this to better understand why not to use MSconfig: Dealing with Startup Process

Now run this >> Reset Firefox to Defaults

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you! Things seem much better now - I did a bit of browsing and got no popups :) I've also told my Dad not to use msconfig.

The logs are attached... what do you reckon?

    You're welcome.

I see a load of things still in MSconfig registry keys. Are you using CCleaner or something else to control startups? MSconfig is not controlling them so these keys should not be showing anything. Ccleaner, Glary Utilities and others make use of the MSconfig registry keys which they should not be doing. These are Microsoft Registry keys and no one else should be using them.

Yes - I was under the impression that CCleaner is ok... I'll get rid of it, then, and make sure to only Hijackthis is used in future.

I reckon I can handle the start up entries myself, so if you can't see anything else wrong with the logs, I think we're done :)

Thanks very much for being so helpful, as always!

I guess you did not read the link ( Dealing with Startup Process ) I gave you.

HIjackThis is not a startup manager. It can be used as a simple permanent removal too for some startups, but is cannot be used as a manager.

I recommend AutoRuns which is mentioned in the link.

You probably will not be able to cleanup all the entries yourself unless you manually cleanup the registry. I think you will have lots of stuck entries due to having used MSconfig.
