When it says a Service is "Stopped" does that mean disabled or just not running now?

Discussion in 'Software' started by conceptualclarity, Jun 7, 2013.

  1. Would some of these "Stopped" programs be running and then stopping before I check?

I have been checking System Configuration Utility and WinPatrol and seeing Stopped for Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN / .NET Runtime Optimization Service (mscorsvw.exe). For several months .NET Framework updates have been failing on my XP system. I wonder if this is related.

I can't alter the Stopped status from System Configuration Utility or WinPatrol.

Hey buddy, you can always just go into Services and start it, then go to Windows Update and scan for updates and if they are there, see if they install.

For .NET Framework updates though you may have to go to Microsoft Update in Internet Explorer.

I don't see where Services is on my XP.

    Does"Stopped" mean disabled?

Go to Start -> All Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Right click on the service in the right pane you want to start and select start from the popup menu.

    Simple answer: NO

    "Stopped" is the Service Status
    "Disabled" is a Startup type

There are three possible settings for a service Startup type:
    • Automatic - the service will Start automatically at boot time
    • Manual - the service will start only when needed
    • Disabled - the service will never start

    To get to services management:

Windows key+R then type in services.msc then select OK

    OR

Windows key (Start) > Run > type in services.msc > OK

Thanks. Administrative Tools was not listed in my All Programs, so I had to do a search for its address and then drag and drop it onto the All Programs menu.

Thanks for the clarification. If Stopped doesn't mean disabled, what exactly does it mean?

Services set to Automatic start when needed and stop when not needed. The program requiring the service dictates when these events will happen.

It feels great to have that clarified.

I found the reason Administrative Tools didn't show. It's a setting in the Start Menu and Taskbar Properties.

Right click Taskbar and select properties then select the Start Menu tab then click the Customize button. Select the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the bottom to System Administrative Tools. By default, "Don't display this item" is selected. But, I, personally select "Display on the All Programs menu and th Start menu". That's why it showed on my computer and not yours.

Services and most other user accessible system features can be accessed by right clicking (My) Computer > Manage.

Thank you for that information. I used it to put Administrative Tools on the front page of my Start Menu. I am trying to get what is now a duplicate entry out of my crowded All Programs menu, and Windows tells me it can't let me delete that, oblivious to it being on my Start Menu front page below Set Program Access and Defaults.

Move the duplicate down below the separator line by left clicking on it and dragging it. It will show at the end of the list. You should then be able to right click it and select delete from the popup menu.

When you say move it below the separator line, are you referring to the Administrative Tools that appeared on the front page of my Start Menu? I like it there. It's the one at the back of All Programs I want to get rid of. In accordance with your advice I moved it as far to the bottom as I could. I right-click on it and the Confirm Folder Delete window appears. I click Yes. That is when I get a window telling me that it's "a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted." That's weird. The rest of the time Windows knows that deleting something from the All Programs menu is not deleting the program itself.

Could I use Windows Explorer to fix this?

Re: When it says a Service is "Stopped" does that mean disabled or just not running n

You created a copy of the actual folder and it's contents and not a shortcut to it. That's why it can't be deleted.

  16. Re: When it says a Service is "Stopped" does that mean disabled or just not running n

So there is no way to make Windows understand it's only a copy that can be dispensed with?

The All Programs menu should consist only of shortcuts, any of which can be deleted by the user. You will need to tell us what it is you are trying to delete before we can help, as it seems something other than a program shortcut has somehow found its way there.
