    All,

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in hardware.:cry

My computer is a Dell Studio XPS 455T/9000. When I try to start Windows I get this error message:
    Status: 0x000000f
The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

The same message appears in Safe Mode and Repair and after Norton Ghost Recovery

I have done the following tests:
    Hard Drive
    Windows PSA+ (Pre-boot System Assessment)
    SpinRite (Mode 4)
    RAM
    Windows PSA+
    MemTes 86
    Virus Scan
    Inside Case Inspection
    Re-seated all easily accessible connectors
    Visual inspection
    Hardware Diagnostics

The only error in all of the tests was in Hardware Diagnostics:
Msg: UUTUSBTM-DEVICE_INITIALIZATION_FAILURE User must reattach unit on ROOT_HUB 3

I am totally stumped here and would appreciate any help.

Disconnect ALL USB devices and try again.

    Thanks for the reply.

I finally ended up taking my computer to a local shop. I dropped it off and went grocery shopping. When I got home the phone rang and they had it running! The guy at the counter tried to explain what had been the problem, but he wasn't very clear. It had to do with booting and the BCD.

The only BCD I know about is binary coded decimal and that obviously isn't it. I didn't want to interrupt the technician so I didn't enquire further. Now when it boots it has me choose Windows 7 before starting Windows.

Anyway, I am typing this on my computer; my original post was on my wife's machine. So far so good.

Sometimes that's the best way - definitely better than flogging on until 3AM and still not cracking it ;)

Have a look in the Start menu and check whether EasyBCD has been installed, possibly in a folder named Neosmart. If so then all he has done is load a bit of free software - 5 minutes max. Being asked what system to load when there is only the one does suggest that that is what he may have done.

    Earthling,

Can't find the program or the folder.

OK, just a hunch, clearly wrong.

I really must bone up on bcdedit - EasyBCD has made me lazy :-o
