Blue Screen

There are some programs on my computer that I am unable to install. It's a 32-bit Dell Vostro 1500, 1.4 GHz processor with 2 MB RAM. And, I'm running XP SP3. I was following the steps in the Malware Removal Guide, and when I got to "Step 2: Installing Tools and Running Scans," I couldn't get past the first step. I double clicked on the RogueKiller icon on my desktop and I didn't even have to click on scan (it just started scanning). About ten seconds went by and I got the notorious blue screen. I turned off my computer manually, waited ten seconds and turned it back on. Then, I retried double clicking RogueKiller and the same thing happened resulting in another blue screen. What should I do?

P.S. I don't know if this is related or not, but I haven't used this computer in over a year. When I got it off the shelf today and started it up, I was not able to even get onto the Internet even though the blue wireless icon was lit up on the computer.

No, this is a different computer. I've got three threads on here about three different computers. One has been resolved, my dad's computer, the other two are this one (Dell Vostro 1500 running XP SP3) and a Sony VAIO running Vista Premium. The Sony is the one having problems with the Sweetpacks. The Sony and the Dell have both Blue Screened on me.

Okay then for non-malware problems ( like uninstalling programs --- I assume that is what you meant in your first message when you said "that I am unable to install" ) you should post in the Software Forum.

Please clarify what malware problems this computer is having if any. We need you to run the whole cleaning procedure if you think you have malware problems. See the early notes in the READ & RUN ME that tell you to keep on going!

I made a mistake. I wrote I'm unable to install but I meant to write that I'm unable to uninstall some programs. I think this is because of malware because when I try to go through the steps in the Malware Removal Guide my computer blue screens on me when I try to run RogueKiller. Also, I can't even connect to the Internet using this computer (even though the blue WiFi icon is lighting up) but can do so without a problem on three of my other computers. What should I do next?

I went ahead and ran the other programs. Here are the logs.

None of this is related to malware. You logs are basically clean other then some minimal junk we will cleanup below. I suggest that you post in the Networking Forum for your inability to access the internet. Looks like your NIC card is not working properly to me. Perhaps it needs drivers reinstalled. Other issues with uninstalling programs should be posted in the Software Forum and you need to be specific about your problems.

Uninstall the below very old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment Make sure that when you see the form asking about installing Ask Toolbar that you uncheck this.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Program Files\StartNow Toolbar
    C:\$AVG8.VAULT$

    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
    "{5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-06B231CC153F}"=-
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{4260182C-53DC-5177-430F-D0D732B41839}]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

My Antivirus program is disabled; however, I was still unable to run OTM. When I clicked on the .exe file the program opened but nothing happened. I'm attaching the JRT.txt file though. Also, I was unable to install the Java update you recommended because my Dell is a 32-bit computer and the update was for a 64-bit.

By the way, the sound won't play on this computer when I try to play video (mp4) files.

As stated previously, your problems are not due to malware. What I last had you do was just cleanup a little junk. It has nothing to do with any of your problems. You need to post in the Software Forum for software issues ( like problems with Windows and blue screens ). For sound problems, you may have to post in the Hardware Forum. Unless it is a software issue with Windows or your sound card.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
