    Hi

I recently had an issue with a browser hijack which I thought I'd managed to get rid of but lately my laptop has been running very slowly and if I try and run full scans of SuperAntiSpyware or MalwareBytes, the system crashes in mid scan.

    Hope you can help.

    Regards
    David

Did you knowingly install anything called LogMeIn Cubby?

    Uninstall iLivid

Re run Hitman and have it delete Potential Unwanted Programs.

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Please save the work in your browsers before proceeding.
    • Double-click JRT.exe to run (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Please attach JRT.txt to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these 3 detections:

    • [SUSP PATH] BrowserDefender.exe -- C:\ProgramData\BrowserDefender\2.6.1339.144\{c16c1ccb-7046-4e5c-a2f3-533ad2fec8e8}\BrowserDefender.exe [7] -> KILLED [TermProc]
    • [SUSP PATH] BrowserDefender.exe -- C:\ProgramData\BrowserDefender\2.6.1339.144\{c16c1ccb-7046-4e5c-a2f3-533ad2fec8e8}\BrowserDefender.exe [7] -> KILLED [TermProc]
Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

    Delete these folders:
    C:\ProgramData\Babylon
    C:\ProgramData\BrowserDefender

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi

    Thanks for the prompt response.

I did install LogMeIn and Cubby. I've never really used LogMeIn in anger as I have tended to use VNCviewer or more recently TeamView so I will get rid of it. I do find Cubby useful for passing files between laptop and desktop on my home network.

I have removed iLivid and run Hitman to completion.

JRT is taking an absolute age to run (about 9 hours so far) and I've had to hibernate the machine to come to work.

I will report further progress later on.

    Thanks once again,
    David

    Hi Kestrel13

Should that be 2 detections or should I also include one of the other unlisted items?

Anything Browser Defender related you need to have RK fix/delete.

    Hi

JRT ran for several more hours and seemingly wasn't going anywhere. I could see BrowserDefender popping up in TaskManager and kept killing it but it always returned. In the end I moved on to the RogueKiller stage without waiting. It reported killing BrowserDefender in its initial scan and it also killed JRT. I carried out the registry deletion although I was perhaps a bit over-enthusiastic there and I couldn't see entries relating to BrowserDefender there. When I exited, I couldn't see a Babylon folder under ProgramData and it wouldn't allow me to delete files under BrowserDefender as it said they were open in Dell Datasafe Local Backup.

I rebooted the machine and was still unable to delete the folder in ProgramData. JRT ran pretty quickly after rebooting.

BrowserDefender is still constantly popping up in TaskManager and RoqueKiller keeps killing 2 proccesses for it.

I have enclosed the logs as requested.

    Regards
    David

Before we continue, you need to use MSCONFIG to put the machine into normal start up mode if you have not done so already.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Delete this folder if it shows:

    C:\ProgramData\BrowserDefender

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Hi

The registry edit gave the success response.

I am still unable to delete the ProgramData\BrowserDefender folder as the folder or items within it are reported to be in use by another program (it did not say which this time around).

I enclose the MGlogs zip file.

    Regards
    David

    Hi

I booted into safe mode and was able to delete the ProgramData\BrowswerDefender folder from there. Back in normal operation, performance seems better and theTaskManager no longer shows BrowserDefender in memory. I have performed a quick scan with SUPERAntiSpyware which came up clean.

Are there any further steps you recommend I take?

    Regards
    David

Hello there, I am sorry, your thread was temporarily lost in the ether to me.

You can follow final steps below if all is well. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi

Many thanks for your help. Nothing is reporting anything although MalwareBytes still crashes towards the end of a full scan. My machine is certainly performing a lot better now.

Many thanks for all your help. I noticed on some of your earlier posts that there was a Thanks button although there wasn't one on your latest post. I take it that is a way of registering thanks officially. Can I click on any of them?

    Regards
    David
