You will always be able to make a case for and against any substance.
Cocaine marijuana steroids all have a pro lobby but that does not detract from the fact they are illegal (steroids in the professional sports arena)
I am not saying that you do not have the right to put whatever you wish into your body just that the government have legislated against the substances for whatever reason they and their advisers have arrived at.

Just as a case in point here in Belgium any product that has codeine in it's make up even in the smallest quantity has to be prescribed by a doctor, even simple headache pills,so as you see some government legislation is made without proper research.

Seatbelt fines are not taxes. That would be a penalty/fine, cause you broke a law and got caught. Do you really want the gubment to control what you are allowed to eat?

As far as seat belt laws, I am against them. Even though I would wear mine anyway. I take it you are not a fan of nanny Bloomberg of NY huh? :-D

I am a fan of seatbelts (not airbags though). They are the reason I am here today:

Been a fan of seat belts long before it was a law here. Saw a small Chevy S10 hit by a log truck. Cab of the truck was in great shape, unfortunately, the guy driving it was not wearing a seatbelt, and was ejected a goodly ways and did not survive.

Been a hectic summer, and cramming 60+ hours into one work week has it's downside. The upside is the bills are paid.

BTW, not a fan of "Nanny Bloomberg" myself. No matter how much you want to legislate moral behavior, freedom in the good ol' US of A means you have the right to be stupid should you so choose. I remember when you could only get a seat belt ticket if you were pulled over for some other infraction. Now, they can just pull you over for not wearing it. I also feel as the "Bionic Belgian" does. Bill is correct, and it should not be the substance which should be put to question, but the substance of the person which should be put to question.

Ahhhh, the slow derision of "freedom"...

yes, making me pay money for NOT wearing a seatbelt is a tax
    Definition of TAX
    1
: to assess or determine judicially the amount of (costs in a court action)
    2
: to levy a tax on
    3
obsolete : to enter (a name) in a list <there went out a decree…that all the world should be taxed — Luke 2:1(Authorized Version)>
    4
: charge, accuse <taxed him with neglect of duty>; also : censure
    5
: to make onerous and rigorous demands on <the job taxed her strength>

you want to call it a fine?
how is making me pay money for not doing an action different than making me pay a percentage of the income I make a year?
Or is that not a tax either?

I call it like it is, but Dont think I am against seatbelts,
I am not, i am against the tax on me when I dont wear them though

seatbelts are a great things, sure,
but making me pay money for anything is a tax or just a plain infringement on my right to life....the same as the government trying to fine me for what I cannot eat/drink. etc

as for bloomberg and trying to make laws against what I eat, etc......
it all comes back to being a kid and living under your parents roof

did your parents ever tell you that you had to do what they said solely because you were living under their roof?
I dont think people should have to listen to the government when it comes to things that won't affect other people, but when they get into car accidents and the taxpayers/government takes care of them because they have no insurance, then they better follow laws to reduce the severity of their injuries; ie seatbelts

I think the same applies to people being overweight, but I dont know of a direct connection to taxpayers/government paying to help people who are fat..
so the solution is not to prevent someone from eating/drinking/doing things that dont affect others but require tax payer money, what should be done is to stop colloding people.

Stop helping them, make them take care of themselves or make better choices

People in the city of South Fulton have fire protection, but those in the surrounding county do not unless they pay a $75 annual fee.

    The city makes no exceptions

Let's first define tax vs fine.

As you gave no link to your quote, I will use mine.

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tax

Now, when we buy gas, we pay a tax. If you speed, you may get caught and pay a fine. If you don't speed, you will not be charged the fine. But you still pay the gas tax the speeder pays, even if he or she is not caught. The fine is a penalty. In one way, taxes are a penalty, but not really. If you don't own a dog, you can't be fined for having your dog off it's leash if you live in a leash law area. So, equating a tax and a fine is not logical.

If you don't pay your bills on time, you may be charged a fine, not a tax.

Now we depart taxes vs fines and enter into the parental arena. For what reason, I don't know. If you live under their roof, do as they say, that is not a tax, it is reality.

Holy cow, that's a bad wreck! Those pictures are just insane. Most people don't survive something like that.

I always put on my seat belt when ever I get in someone's car. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I was the sole survivor of two vehicles. Luckily I was alone. The child seat base buckled to the back seat literally broke and the car caught on fire. A passerby was able to pry my door open and get me out.

Ironic that we got onto the subject of seatbelts and wrecks. My wife took my car in yesterday to get the driver side window adjusted (heat kills window motors here), and they did a recall TSB on the brake switch.

She drove it a mile or so and the front brakes locked up and the traction control malfunctioned. Lucky she was able to pull into a gas station instead of wrecking.

They towed it back to the dealership :(

Yikes! Good thing she was able to pull over before something happened.

That reminds me, a bunch of us (about 15) took a road trip 4th of July weekend. We drove about 9-10 hours round trip with lots of stops in between.

The next day my friend told me after he dropped off the last two people, he was heading back to return the van and he realized he had to press the the brake pedal all the way to the floor just to get any any response from it at all. He was able to pull over in a parking lot and put the emergency brake on. It's scary to think what would have happened if the brakes had failed while we were on the highway instead of a local side street. :/

Since we are predictably off topc, here is a picture of my current wrap victim, an old Toyota truck used for shop errands. We have the driver's side wrapped, the hood and tailgate.

Not bad for a couple of CAC's in my opinion. :-D Sucker had a lot of primer before we wrapped it.

I just have to come up with a cool wrapper name now. :-D

Nice car, what engine and BHP?

  24. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

3.8L, 306 bhp (on 87 octane). Pretty strong engine, Hyundai is stepping up their game.
    RWD, too:yum

The 2013 model has 343 with the same engine (with premium fuel), but I would have paid nearly 15k more than I did for this one. This one only had 39k miles on it.

I prefer small car payments and the car is only a few years old. Where I drive, its all highway or 30-40mph, so that extra 37HP doesn't really matter.

The only real drawback is that this is a 1st gen Genesis Coupe, so I have ALL the glitches.

Most of them are electronic. I am getting them sorted though.

    Hey Adryn

Nice engine and RWD also is a plus for getting the power down if needed and not shredding the front tires, I know my car kills fronts.

UK tends to have only 95 and 98 RON (octane) guess that's why we pay more for fuel!

Yes more electronic gadgets the worse cars become, I have been lucky and X-fingers no electronic issues I have had and I have a car with Windows Mobile Media installed!!!!! (Blue and Me) *car in pic is not mine, mine is the one when you click MUSIC*

Hmm, can you install a 'Nix on it? Having that Windows button on the steering wheel would be a deal breaker for me. To many BSODS in my past. Of course many of those were caused by me overclocking, but it is easier to blame the OS. :-D

  33. DavidGP

Well don't think I could do that, or I think..... nah thought about it and likely not as to *nix on it, I guess in future cars will be more iOS, Windows, *nix based in their entertainment and user ability options, we can see this in some cars today.

The Windows button on the steering wheel is a great conversation breaker.

I had a Spec-V, which was crumpled as you saw in the pictures. Oddly enough 2.4 and 2.5L engines are not very fuel efficient.

I get about 7-10 mpg better with a 3.8L V6 than the 2.5L that was in my Spec V.

  38. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

    hahhaahaha fantastic

Yes indeed my 2.4 was bad as hell for fuel as it would fill it up every two weeks as my current car is every month (4 weeks on average)

I guess the modern engines are more getting fuel efficient even if they are large ltr sizes.

  39. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    Every four weeks?

    Sheesh.

I drive 1,400 miles a month. I'm filling up every week.

  40. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Yeah don't drive as much distance as I used too and as the UK is minute we don't have to travel great distances.

I would likely get through no more than 350mi per month, and the car has a button to lower the torque nm, throttle response and fuel usage down, so that helps economy around town as city driving (stop start) is all my daily commute to work.

  41. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

    You underclock your car? :cry

Just joking, with the price for gallon, or liter, so high, I don't blame you. Actually a pretty cool feature. If I could keep my right foot off the accelerator a little more, I would get better mileage. :-D

  42. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

hahahahaha not the geeky way :(

But yeah Fred that was one consideration in having this car, price of gas has as always gone up again, its summer, kids and families off on vacation so we take a hit.

One other neat addition is cruise control, really good on motorway (highway) driving, that helps with fuel consumption as stops the right foot from becoming twitchy

Hi i'm back, i made it through another operation.

I have a Toyota RAV4 2.2 litre that gives 48 mpg and that is city driving with a light right foot (no sprinting away from the stop lights) it will go up a little this month because my wife just can not get her head around the 6 speed gearbox and only uses 5 max (i am not allowed to drive for 6 weeks after my op.) and that is with the airco on all the time,if i shut that down it would probably do better.
