My kids' old HP desktop experienced complete harddrive failure today.

I have never installed any hardware of any kind into a computer (sad, yes, I know :p).

I went to Best Buy (yes, again, sad...but I was looking for instant gratification on my endeavor) and bought a new hard drive. I was pretty much committed since I had managed to open up the case and take out the old harddrive.

The computer is now booting up using the Recovery disks I have from HP. It seems to be working. :)

    Update to follow.

It really can't be this easy. lol

Okay...well, first mistake....I just noticed I have two leftover screws. LOL

(luckily, I know where they go)

First step for be coming a true geek.Ripping some thing apart and then putting it back together.:-D

Information is good to have but it is all ways best to learn how it is done.No body and i mean no body showed me how to do any of these things and now i can build my own system with out problem. This kinda stuff is the easiest thing to do compared to installing and fixing software problems.

But i would have gone a different rout then best buy more like best junk if you ask me:-D

Yeah, if you have it physically installed and it boots, then I'd say "mission successful", LoL! 'Spare' screws don't matter much, as long as the HDD isn't falling off, it's fine. Fortunately, many HHDD's are also pre-formated, which saves a lot of time and effort, esp. for N00bs, LoL!;).
Now to re-install all progs., that's the real P.I.T.A., i.m.o.

*pulls hair out of head and cries*

All going well until the damn thing goes to start up and I get the error "Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware"

    Ugh...back to the drawing board.

On a sidenote, I love when there's tons of search results for you error code, yet there's no solution to be found. :(

    Hi Laura,
Do you have a USB stick installed?
    If so, remove it,

Go into BIOS and select Default to make sure the HDD you are using for the install is selected.

Don't worry about a strap- I haven't (nor have any tech friend's I know) used one in years.
Just make sure to ground yourself by constantly touching metal on the case.

@Laura: Have you changed anything in the BIOS?

  12. Goldenskull

My first thought comes to mind about the BIOS is the Boot sequence. She forgot to adjust or readjust it back From 1 to 2 or some thing.Your main hard drive should be put in sequence 1 and CD rom in 2 or 3 depending on how many hard drives you have. You need to write down what your main hard drives serial so you know what to put in sequence 1.

And on a side note i have two languages English and Bad English. As long as you can read it then who cares. And be leave me i am not the worst here.

Laura, did you make sure to format and partition the Hard Drive before use? Recovery discs in my experience don't do that.

Also I've never put a computer together and not had spare screws. Often they end up rattling around inside the computer. :D

Finally, wrist straps are for sissies. :p

Agreed there is no real need for them as long as you are grounded your fine. You really don't need a static strap.I have never been shocked bye a computer never and i have even touched stuff inside while it is running.

The really only way i can think of you would get a static discharge from the case is if the air it self around is really really dry that is the only way i can think of.

Okay...well, my first hardware installation was an epic failure. I'm sure it has to do with the fact that I'm using a set of HP Recovery disks to reinstall windows and it's not jiving with the new HDD.

I'm taking it out and returning it to Best Buy. I spent all day yesterday working on possible fixes as posted online and none worked.

    :(

@ Triaxx...the recovery disks partition and format.
Re: wriststrap...I did not use one. I'm a risk taker. :-D

Oh, and believe me. I've been in the Bios way more in one day than I have ever been in 10 years of computers. :-D

The damn thing was in there and recognized. All seemed to be going smoothly until windows couldn't finish installing. I changed it from raid to ahci. I set the bios back to default which I believe clears the CMOS. I even tried using some other weird thing using command prompts and doing something with oobe, whatever that is. That even seemed to be working when I got to naming the computer and the initial setup. That was temporary though.

    SO....thank you all~! I suck. :-D

I decided this computer is not worth the aggravation. The HDD is all boxed up and ready to make a trip back to Best Buy. Maybe I'll go online and look for a cheap hard drive and try it again, but $80 is too much to spend on it if it's not going to work.

I know this will sound crazy but in the past i have encountered similar problems and what i did was to install ubuntu OS on the disk then installed windows on the drive where it is installed.

The only reason i can think that it worked is that the new installation automatically formatted the disk before installation.

P.S. this was installing from full OS disk so i am not sure it will work with recovery disks???

Another way is to download bitdefender rescue CD and run it,in there is an Acronis application that will prepare a disk for installation, I have used this when the MBR is not working correctly.

I get my HDD's from 3BTech.net They're mostly System Pulls, but they're extremely good about returns. And if you get one with something wrong, they're equally good about replacements.

You can get SATA system pulls for $30. Takes Amazon and Newegg both behind the woodshed for an education. Shipping's included in the price too, just to rub salt into the wound.

I've had 'windows cannot be configured on this hardware' a few times while installing windows 7, you can fluke it by re-formatting the hard drive and then starting the windows install process again and it will just, not happen.

Never figured out what caused it, one time I was sure it was due to installing 64bit win 7 ultimate on older hardware, another time I was sure it was some hardware sleep mode shutting components down during the install, I also heard it can happen more when the windows copy is on dvdr's.

I would guess it's this though, not offering support just saying:-D

I thought the lounge needed a little pick me up. :-D

The hdd begged me for a whole day to let him live with me. I thought about it and tried to make our relationship work. Sadly, he only made a half effort to do his part. I tried to be sweet, I begged, I cursed. He just wouldn't perform the way I needed him to.

So, since he is back at his unfortunate home in Best Buy, and this isn't really support you are giving, I'll say I saw that. LOL This was a 6 or 7 year old Vista computer, though and I tried those...no cigar.

I agree return the drive to bestbuy by firing it through the window at a couple of hundred miles per hour using a 40 foot trebuchet then destroy the computer with acid or fire and spread the ashes over IBM's parking lot.

The "spell check " wouldn't work either, because he uses "beleave me" (sic)

Personally over the year I have had a few HDD errors or total crashes, which is why a good backup regime is needed and more so these days as we store most of our lives on our computer.

I personally use Acronis True Image to clone my main SSD weekly and I do not store any personal files on the main SSD, I tend to store personal data on a 2nd HHD and "cloud" as in Skydrive as I have 25GB of space to use.

The best and most useful thing I got out of this is that I just really didn't care about this particular computer and I gained major confidence by opening it up and taking the hard drive out. Even if it didn't work, I learned it's just not that hard to do. :)

The new computer came on Thursday. It's a Windows 8 with a 23 inch touchscreen. 12GB of Ram. Plenty of space for me to move all my photoediting over to it from my laptop. Plus, HP had a no payment for 12 months deal.

My kids are in heaven and I have to say I'm having fun too.:)

WOW sound neat what model PC did you get?

Windows 8 great, the 8.1 refresh will be a welcome update, not that I hate the metro icons as I'm used to using the Winkey, but for some its a sticking point, but the update adds to a great OS. IMHO

I am running Windows 8.1 on my Surface Pro and an old Netbook.

Glad you like your new computer. I worked on a laptop yesterday with Win 8. HATED it!! It has 'charms'? WTF? Laptop had a failure, and will be sent back to HP on their dime for repair.

Windows 8 and give it a go and the Metro UI and charms actually work fine, I base all my thoughts on two criteria as I'm ok with any OS as they don't cause me any issues.

The two criteria for me are:

Can my 72yr old mother use it = YES
Can my 9 and 14yr old Niece's use it = YES

Actually my mom loves the Metro UI as it gives her the applications she needs on the desktop right away with no fuss, I did admittedly need to show her how to add apps and setup the UI as she wanted but she grasped it quickly and she is someone who uses Outlook opposed to other email apps and Outlook is not the easiest to use at times.

The its not going to be an issue to anyone who has an open mind, opposed to a close "its not like Window XP mentality" :)

I do have with my Surface a keyboard has the charms keys as standard, that helps a little for shortcuts, but touch with Surface is ultra quick, but I do prefer the keyboard for many tasks so I use my Surface Pro as a ultra book over a tablet (aka iPad).

    Poke you in the eye!

To be honest and I test Microsoft software a lot, the jump from Windows 7 which was no different to XP to then Windows 8 was seamless to a point, yes the Metro UI was a weird addition but given a few weeks it was not so bad and even using a mouse for the UI travel.

I agree granted Windows 8 and its Metro UI is more geared to touch and I see the benefits with my Surface Pro tablet in this UI, but for desktop its a bit funky to start with, then you get to a point when you load your fav apps in the Metro UI tiles and all is to hand, no menus to drill through.

I think Windows 8.1 and I'm using in on one PC now is a great update to change the Metro UI issues that many folk have to this UI.

I do think at some point we need to drop the old UI look as new ways will come and we need to embrace them now or get left behind, touch and touch screens are more becoming the norm, was reading this week of touch watches from Google and Microsoft, that link in with our electronic social media and lives.

Touch screen are great for tablets and phones. For my PC, a touch screen would not work, I can't touch my monitor from where I sit. For me, Win3.whatever to Win95 was easy, Win95 to XP was easy, Vista, not too bad, Win 7 I like, just can't find some things. Win 8, don't like it. Hopefully it will be one of the OS's that are 'skipped'. Like Win ME, kinda like Vista. Released, but not really mainstream. (at least in my experience).

Maybe they will come up with Win9.4 vFOFWDLC?? (For Old Farts Who Don't Like Change) ;)
