Going through all trying to determine why or what is causing the slodown I have had chronically.
After watching an arrow go in sircles for a few minutes while loading a program, I went to Task Manager.
It listed My Documents, and when that was high lighted I got an error message that my documents was not responding.
M D is not a program to my knowledge, just a file.
How did it get in with programs and what do I do wit it? Don't know it has any bearing on slowdowns. however...

A little more detail is needed.

Yes, my doc is a folder, but if you open any file or folder it should show up in the Task Manager, where you can end it if it is not responding or something have locked it up.

    What exactly were you doing?

You can use a program called 'unlocker' for xp especially that just loves to lock up files, unlocker can remove the pointers from the file, hence unlocking it.

You may also want to run a malware scan if you suspect malware is locking up your PC.
You can use the malware removal thread if anything is found, or you don't know how to scan for malware.

    Skysarge...

I run XP SP3, and I get that error every once in awhile. It's normal as the folder windows are part of explorer.exe (it's really what's having the problem). When the PC bogs down the error is stated as the specific folder as a feature of Windows, since shutting down explorer.exe is not recommended unless absolutely necessary. A boggy/slow machine will generate those errors, but the actual problem is the bogginess, not anything to do with the folder.

What are the PC specs and what are you using it for? Medium/heavy internet browsing can be too much on P4 and earlier machines these days...

Ran a malware yesterday for "Internet Helper" But, no problem doing it again. Something might have popped up in the interim
What I was doing was trying to load a game and other programs that were loading with the speed of January molasses. I thought something had locked, it was taking so long, as in minutes - several.
    This slowdown is frustrating
My Documents keeps loading according to TM. I ended it, the msg "not responding" appeared, I took it off, and before I could closed TM. document had come back up. Had to repeat the steps, waited a few seconds and MD once again came up on the MD screen.

    Your PC specs;
    CPU type and speed
    RAM
HDD size, and free space, the last time you defragged it.

also, you may want to run ccleaner - check the malware thread for details

    yup, that explains a lot!
Your free space is running short, though, it can do for now for most applications. I wouldn't suggest burning DVDs though.

2 GHZ processor with 1 GB RAM on XP is right on the edge of barely making the requirements for normal internet browsing these days. But it should run most of your XP applications

I suggest trying to free up some space on your HDD. I would suggest leaving a minimum of 10 GB free, more if possible.

Either of these is good at providing a visual map of hard drive space usage.

SpaceSniffer is standalone - no installation needed.
    WinDirStat also very good.
